“Thank you,” he said. “But asking for your permission is part of my proper courtship of you. I have been something of a troublemaker to you since our acquaintance began. I wish to start again on the right foot, so to speak.” He grinned at his terrible joke.

Rebecca laughed.

“Adieu, then. Until tomorrow, my dearest Rebecca.” He bowed over her hand, and since her family was right before them, he merely kissed it politely before taking his leave of them.

He was in love with her. He wanted to court her and properly ask Papa for her hand.

It was more than Rebecca had dared to hope.

“That appeared to be one of the more successful waltzes I’ve observed this Season, if the expressions on both your faces are anything to go by,” Aylesham observed drily.

“My dear Aylesham, I am inclined to agree with you,” Susan said.

“It remains to be seen,” Rebecca replied. “But I am hopeful.”

And for the first time since their dreadful encounter at the stile, Rebecca was more hopeful than she’d ever been.
