“Oh, don’t be like that, Oli,” Sarah purrs, taking a step toward me until I’m backed up against the wall. She runs her hand over my chest. “Surely you’re bored with Hannah by now. I thought you might like to have some more fun.”

I snort as I shake my head. “You’re delusional, Sarah.”

“You’ve gotta be kidding me.”

My eyes shoot up to meet Hannah’s. She’s standing at the entrance of the club, three feet away from us. The blood drains from her face as she takes in the ill-fated position I’m in: backed up against the wall of the club with Sarah’s hand still resting on my chest.

But she isn’t the one who spoke. Over Hannah’s shoulder, Joel’s fiery eyes fix on Sarah and me, his fists clenched by his side. One of his teammates is holding him back. Can this night get any worse?

Sarah smirks as I sidestep away from her, making my way over to Hannah. “It’s not what it looks like,” I insist, cupping her chin to get her to look up at me. The tears shining in her eyes are like a punch in the gut, but I take it as a good sign when she doesn’t pull away. “The lights and music, it gave me a headache, so I came out here for some fresh air. I had no idea she was here. I don’t want anything to do with her. I promise.”

“That’s not what you were saying a couple of minutes ago.” Sarah’s mocking tone grates my nerves. “I believe your exact words were, ‘I’m coming, babe.’ Right, Caley?”

I shoot a filthy look in her direction. “Shut up, Sarah. I wouldn’t go near you if you were the last girl on Earth.”

Hannah is knocked to the side as Joel shoves me back against the building and pain radiates through my skull for the second time tonight as my head hits the wall.

“You think you’re so good, don’t you, Oli?” he growls. “Girls throwing themselves all over you because they think you’re the next AFL superstar.” He glances over at Hannah as Tiana rushes over to help her to her feet. “I’d watch your boyfriend if I were you. He doesn’t seem to care going after other people’s girlfriends. Once a cheater, always a cheater.”

I struggle to get free from Joel, but his arm is crossed against my chest. Pain shoots through my shoulder and the back of my head.

“Let go of me, man.” My vision starts to blur. “I don’t want anything to do with your girlfriend. She came onto me.”

“I’m not his girlfriend,” Sarah retorts.

We both ignore her.

“What’s the point of all this anyway, man?” I ask him. “All you’ve succeeded in doing is risk both of our careers. You got suspended. You know that doesn’t look good to the league. And for what? A girl who played us both? Was she worth it?”

Joel’s hold on me loosens and I shove him away from me, making my way over to Hannah. I wrap my arm around her shoulder as she buries her head in my chest.

“You’re both pathetic,” Sarah scoffs, flipping her hair over her shoulder.

“Enough, Sarah!” Hannah shouts, surprising everyone. “Oliver’s right. You played them both and look what happened. Oliver got injured and Joel’s footy career is… is… well, I don’t know what it is, but you need to stop messing with people’s lives. It’s not right.”

Sarah’s jaw drops and she glares at my girlfriend before narrowing her eyes at me. “You think you’re such a nice guy, but it wasn’t difficult for me to turn you against your so-called best friend.”

She sneers, turning to Joel. “And you’ve always had a chip on your shoulder knowing Oliver’s a better footy player than you. You’ve only got your testosterone to blame for whatever happened. You’re not putting that one on me.”

“Sarah, stop,” Tiana pleads, shrinking back as Sarah turns on her.

But I’m not going to let Sarah railroad anyone else tonight. “Seriously, just stay away from me, and stay away from Hannah. We don’t want anything to do with you.” I shake my head. “What the hell is wrong with you? You won’t be happy until you’ve ruined everyone’s lives, making us all as miserable as you are.”

Caley grabs Sarah’s arm, hissing, “Security’s coming.” She glances over her shoulder before they take off, leaving Tiana standing next to me and Hannah looking lost.

Joel rubs the back of his neck. “Listen, man, I’m really sor–”

I put my hand up to stop him. “Save it. I don’t want to hear it.” I turn to Hannah and Tiana. “You okay? You wanna go back inside?”

Tiana shakes her head. “I’m just going to call my mum to come get me.”

“I can give you a lift,” Joel offers.

“I’m good. Mum will come get me.”

Hannah squeezes her arm. “We’ll wait with you until she comes.”

Joel’s shoulders slump as he looks back and forth between the three of us before his mates pull him away.
