‘Pardon?’ He choked on a mouthful of food.

‘My summary.’ She quirked her eyebrow, holding back a giggle.

‘Sure.’ He cleared his throat.

‘So…’ She lifted her notes and read out the main points. ‘Another week should do it.’

‘That’s all?’ He threw the empty containers back into the basket.

‘It’ll take me a while to write the report but the groundwork should be done by next Friday. Unless there’s torrential rain for a week.’

‘Let’s not count it out. It won’t be the first time.’

‘But you don’t have to pay me if I’m not on site.’ She stretched over the picnic basket and pressed her fingers on his arm to reassure him.

He glanced at her hand, then back to her face. ‘I know.’

‘I’ll miss it here.’

Calum shut the picnic basket lid and shoved it behind him. Rhona took it as an invitation and shuffled up beside him.

‘This has been ok, hasn’t it?’ She peered up at him, swinging her legs.

‘What has?’

‘A Matheson and a Lamond working together.’

‘It’s been an eye-opener.’

Rhona checked her cleavage in case she’d dropped a grape or something onto it and he was actually alluding to that. Everything looked normal. She swallowed, then gently nudged her head against his shoulder. ‘I haven’t uncovered treasure but this place has opened a whole new world for me.’

‘I’m glad.’ His body stiffened but he didn’t move away.

Rhona closed her eyes, still leaning her ear on him. ‘Thanks for trusting me and letting me do it.’

‘I would say anytime but I’m not sure I want a repeat of this.’

She lifted her head to withdraw, but his arm swept around her before she could move. He cupped her shoulder. Wow. His palm was so warm. Being held like this, however light his touch was, gave her an overpowering sense of being special, important and wanted.

‘I don’t mean you. I mean, I don’t want to have any more archaeological digs on my land. From a purely miserly point of view.’

With a sigh, she leaned on him again. Slowly, she crept her fingertips to his thigh and gently squeezed it. Forward maybe, but it was visceral. She wanted to touch him. He twitched and put his own hand over hers.

‘You’re a very nice person,’ he said. ‘For a Lamond.’

‘Cheeky, Mr Matheson.’ Their gazes met. She held eye contact for as long as she dared. The sparkometer burst into overdrive. Is he going to kiss me? Am I going to kiss him?Something was going to happen. Wasn’t it? The charge in the air was unmistakable. She kept staring until he uncurled her fingers from his thigh. Slowly, he turned over her hand, raised it to his lips and gently kissed the inside of her wrist.

Her heart stopped. She closed her eyes. That had to be the most sensual thing anyone had ever done to her.Take me wherever you want to…

‘Right.’ Calum gently released her. ‘We should get moving.’

‘We should… Should we?’ She blinked. That was it?

‘Uh-huh.’ He jumped to his feet and lifted the picnic basket. ‘Do you want a lift down the road?’

‘Um, no thank you. I’d like to walk.’

‘Ok. Well, you have a great weekend and I’ll see you on Monday.’
