‘Yeah, right. The acne-faced teen who reduced you to fits of giggles. I’m not that green.’

‘That’s the point. The giggles were to cover it up. I couldn’t exactly shout it from the rooftops. You’re four years older than me and at school that’s a big gap.’

A muscle in his jaw twitched. ‘Nothing to do with the fact I looked like I had permanent chickenpox and people called me the leper?’

‘Not really. Maybe I was a bit embarrassed to like you.’

‘I bet.’

‘But…’ She slipped her hand over his where it was resting on the dusty wooden edge. ‘I always wanted to find out about the boy inside.’

‘Did you?’

‘Yup. I went to Arran’s football club every week, hoping you’d be there.’

‘I never liked football. I avoided hanging out after school because it was bad enough having people rip the piss out of me during the day. My dad took me to karate at the weekends.’

‘I didn’t know that.’

‘I still do it.’

‘Do you?’

‘Uh-huh.’ He straightened and his chin jutted forward. ‘I’m a black belt now.’

‘Wowsers. You must be brilliant.’

‘I’m out of training, which is frustrating because I’ve got a competition coming up.’

‘Wow, I’d like to see that.’

‘Why?’

‘Because my thirteen-year-old self still lives in me and quite fancies the idea of you hot and sweaty.’

‘Keep talking like that and you’ll get your wish.’ He tugged at his neckline. Rhona shuffled forward and stared at him until he looked back.

She held his gaze. ‘Calum… I really… I…’ She beckoned him closer.

‘What?’

She shuffled closer, unable to pull her focus from him. Her heart thundered in her ears.

‘What are you doing?’ His voice was less than a whisper.

‘Can I give you a kiss? A teeny tiny one?’ She mirrored his hushed tone.

His eyes fixed on her and lit up. He licked his lips very slightly. Rhona’s pulse rate skyrocketed.

‘Yes. I’ve wanted to ever since—’ He leaned forward and sealed his lips over hers. The pointer on the sparkometer spun right off and snapped. She slid her fingers around his jaw and he peppered her with slow yet powerful kisses.

‘Me too.’

They melted together. Rhona’s stomach burned with desperation and she opened her mouth, her tongue found his and fireworks erupted deep inside.

If they could let go of the Matheson versus Lamond angst, she could do this every day. Calum broke away just as she was getting into it. He hoisted his legs inside so they were side by side, facing each other. ‘That was…’ He swallowed, threading his fingertips into the hair above her ear.

‘What?’
