Judy sniffed beside her and did the same. Rhona leapt between the two of them and pulled them into a giant group hug.

Calum’s chest was considerably lighter as they said goodbye later in the afternoon. ‘That was better than I expected,’ he said, as they strolled towards his apartment.

‘I’m glad it’s done though,’ Rhona said. ‘Hopefully that’s paved the way for happier times ahead.’

Calum zapped open the car as they approached it. ‘Let’s hope.’

‘Are we going somewhere?’

‘Into the sea.’

‘What? You mean it?’

‘I promised, so let’s do it.’

He drove to Kilnarkie and they ambled to the secluded beach in front of the dig site, holding hands and stopping for an occasional kiss. The sun was setting beyond, silhouetting the distant Isle of Coll where Rhona had first proposed skinny dipping.

‘Ok.’ Calum unzipped his Trespass jacket. ‘Let’s get it over with.’

‘You’re actually going to? Even though you don’t even like getting your feet wet?’

‘Yup.’ He discarded his jacket, followed by his t-shirt. Rhona grinned, checking him out. He gave a little shrug. She’d seen it before but if it made her want to come back for more, who was he to complain? All thoughts of complaining or anything else were knocked out of the water when she mirrored him and pulled off her top. She was hotter than the infernos of hell and caused as much damage to his brain. Skinny dipping was slipping to the bottom of the list of things he wanted to do, but he wouldn’t chicken out that easily. Simultaneously they slid out of their remaining clothes. Then…What the?She slammed herself against him, threaded her fingers through his hair and kissed him. Skinny dipping wasn’t happening, not tonight. But no, shit.As soon as she’d started, she let go and ran for it. Calum threw back his head and let out an exasperated shout, then legged it after her.

Wherever she went, he was going too, and he wouldn’t let anything push them apart ever again.

Epilogue

Rhona

Flutters of disjointed reality swooped through Rhona’s tummy as she clung to Calum’s hand. She was here, in Egypt. The place every archaeologist everywhere had to visit at least once in their lifetime.

November was a good time; the weather was warm but not as baking as during the summer and so far, the sunblock was holding.

Calum adjusted his panama hat. Coupled with his neat dark hair and brows it leant him a nineteen-thirties debonair style. Rhona beamed.

‘What?’ He frowned as she smirked at him.

‘You’re like the handsome cad fromDeath on the Nile.’

‘Am I? Well, let’s hope you don’t end up as my latest victim.’ He lifted an eyebrow and pulled an evil grin.

‘Yikes. Are you the murderer?’

He wrapped his arm around her. ‘Possibly, but until we find out, I’ll be the rakish lover.’

She chuckled and poked him. ‘That sounds more like it.’

From outside their hotel, they got on the charter bus bound for the great pyramid. Rhona pulled out her phone, leaned into Calum and snapped a selfie.

‘We need a selfie on the bus?’ he said.

‘I’m having a record of everything and it’s all going on Facebook.’

‘Why?’

‘Because Simon just messaged me.’ He’d returned to Crete for the year and was working again with Annike.
