He grinned, using his charm. “Any chance to get a massage?”

“Not today, I’m afraid. We’re fully booked into next month.”

He made a pretend grimace. “Too bad, darling. Would it be worth it to wait for an appointment?”

“For sure. We have wonderfully skilled employees and get rave reviews.” Her eyes grew large as she responded.

Pretending more interest, he added, “Any chance of seeing the rooms where this procedure would be taking place? I’m thinking to get my mom a special gift for her birthday too.”

Cooing, the girl nodded delightedly. “Of course, you can see a room. In fact, one of the girls is off for lunch at the moment so if you want to come with me, I can quickly show you now.”

Kurt saw her looking at her watch. “I’m sorry. Am I taking up your time?”

“No, no it’s fine. I started lunch a little while ago, but I don’t mind taking a few minutes to show you around.”

“Well, now, aren’t you a sweetheart, Julie?” He pointed to her name tag. “I’m Kurt.”

“We aim to please, Kurt.” She smiled seductively, delighted with her comeback, and Kurt returned her smile. “Maybe after you show me the place, I can take you for lunch to make up for you giving up your time for me.”

Happy now, the girl opened the door to the room he wanted to see, and she added, “I usually just eat here at the lunchroom, but there is a small cafeteria at the main spa. If that works for you?”

Kurt pretended to be very interested in the small space that held a narrow bed-like table with a special headrest, a beautiful water feature that glowed with a soft light shining on the healthy plant growing behind, and a wall with glass-fronted cupboards where one could see oils, soaps, and other products needed by a therapist doing her job. There were also closets, no doubt hiding towels and spa equipment which left the room looking uncluttered.

“That’s perfect. My mom would love this place.” He grinned at her and put his hands together. “Now, I’ll be happy to take you to eat here. It’ll give us more time to spend together if we don’t have far to go.” He leaned in so she saw his truthfulness. “By the way, are all the massage rooms the same?”

“Of course. Well, almost all of them. There is one that’s larger and the most experienced therapists work there.”

“Are those the ladies from China?”

“Now that you mention it. If you’ve seen enough, I’ll grab my purse and we can go. The restaurant is only a few steps away from this building, so it won’t take long. You’ll notice they provide a healthy menu. Their sandwiches are wonderful.”

In a short time, Kurt guided the talkative young woman in front of him to a table by the window overlooking well-manicured lawns. Within minutes of arriving, they were able to give their orders and were provided with specialty green teas while they waited.

“How long have you worked at this spa, Julie?”

“About a year. I love being in such beautiful, restful surroundings and the people here are very nice.”

“I met the manager. She seemed a bit prickly to me.”

“Oh, her. She’s new, so I haven’t gotten to know her too well.”

“When did she start?”

“About four months ago. She and another worker from Shanghai arrived after the spa was sold. I believe the new owners are Chinese also.”

“Do they give any special treatments here other than the usual that’s offered at spas?”

Julie looked confused. “Why would you ask that?”

“Well, because you said they were Chinese, and I figured they must do things differently. Aren’t they more into the spiritual types of healing than we are in this country?”

“Oh, I see. Yes. Now that you mention it, the larger massage room has some pretty weird equipment that I’ve never been around before. I’ve just associated it with their more traditional methods of therapy. Every person who comes from having a massage with those professionals is always pleased by the results. Some are even euphoric.”

He laughed. “Seriously, people get that deep into it?”

Julie giggled. “It’s true. I’ve seen people leave here all tripped out.”

“Maybe the Chinese use drugs as part of their treatment?”
