“Yes, sir,” I teased, a flash of heat appeared in his eyes before he stamped it out and glanced away. Flirting with him was fun, mainly just to get under his skin. It was the perfect distraction from the dark memories still burning through my mind.

When I brought back drinks, he already hadResident Evilup on the screen. I handed him a bowl of popcorn and plopped down next to him, our legs resting together. I refused to think about how much I liked that he was a touchy guy and how good it felt to be close to him. It was an effortless camaraderie and I needed that between Leven’s sexual tension and Callum’s cockiness.

“Zombies?”

“We’re wolves, Vanya, zombies are totally real,” he argued. “You never know what else is out there, hiding in the shadows.”

“I heard rumors once that vampires are real,” I said. “It was an urban legend back in my old pack.”

“Shut up,” he laughed. “Ancient blood drinkers? And you don’t believe in zombies?”

“I never said that I thought they were real,” I shot back. “But go ahead, convince me.” I gestured to the TV and he hit play. The sound system in the room was huge, making it sound like a movie theater. I was hooked the first few minutes, even if the action and clothes were a bit outdated now.

The tension started to rise between us, charged with something neither of us felt comfortable admitting yet, so I kept my distance. Eventually though, I found myself leaning my head on his shoulder and my eyes slipping closed, his presence alone chasing away the impending nightmares.

ChapterThirteen

Vanya

“What is this?” Leven’s barking tone had my heart stopping and simultaneously pounding in my chest.

“Jesus, Leven,” I growled, rubbing the sleep out of my eyes. “What?”

“Shit,” Nyx cursed, moving away from me so fast that I fell over, getting more annoyed by the minute.

“I leave her in your care and you sleep on the job?” Leven yelled, his tone loud enough that I flinched.

“I asked him to stay with me,” I told him, but that only seemed to ignite his fury even more.

“Honestly, I don’t care if you begged, naked on your knees, that’s not what his orders were,” Leven continued. His words hit me like a slap to the face and I was on my feet, poking him in the chest.

“I don’t give a fuck what you say, you don’t get to speak to anyone like that. I’m capable of keeping my legs closed you fucking dick, and you know nothing about us or our decisions.”

“Nyx, headquarters, now. I’ll deal with you in a minute,” Leven growled like I hadn’t said a word. “And you, don’t compromise my men or your safety ever again. I knew I couldn’t trust you.”

“No worries,” I agreed calmly. He narrowed his eyes before he deemed me not worthy of his time and stormed out. He might be heading to the guard’s quarters, but I was going for Callum’s place.

He was standing outside when I arrived, talking to Antonio. His face was set in an angry line and when I approached, he dismissed Antonio, turning his hard look toward me.

“We didn’t find him. He’s good at what he does,” he started. “That tracker is playing a game with us, and we can’t do anything other than keep fucking playing our part.”

“Do you think he has a bigger plan? Why all this for me?” I asked, letting out a breath as my anger slipped away. True fear struck me. Anyone this sadistic and calculated would not let me go. Not until he was dead. And if Callum, Leven, and their highly trained team couldn’t find him, what hope did I have of ever leaving this compound? Of living a life…

“I’ve never seen a tracker just choose someone at random. I’m hesitant to say he justhappenedto be at that bar with you, that he got rejected and then chose to make this elaborate of an attack for that?”

“Could it be those wolves who tried to capture me?” I wondered out loud, not necessarily expecting an answer.

“Possibly, but they would have to mobilize fast, and I doubt that would be possible before you disappeared into traffic,” he sighed, heading over to his porch and settling in on the porch swing. I followed him, letting the fresh air chase away the last of the grogginess.

“Leven is angry and might kill Nyx,” I told him. He turned to me, letting out a laugh before pushing off, letting us swing a few times as his hands ran through his hair. He looked exhausted now, his body covered in patches of dirt and there were dark bags under his eyes.

“What happened?”

“We fell asleep watching a movie last night and that’s how Leven found us this morning. Apparently being literally next to me wasn’t close enough to keep me safe,” I admitted. “Then he reminded me he couldn’t trust me.”

“He’s an idiot,” Callum sighed. “I’ll talk to him and see what the hell is going on.”

“Nothing even happened for him to get angry about, Nyx was just being a nice person.” I sighed, hating that I felt like I was getting pulled in three different directions with no end in sight. Here I was claiming I wanted no strings, but relaxing with Callum, spending the evening with Nyx, and having hate sex with Leven.
