“He has my sister,” I said, breaking down completely. Leven knew my story now, they both did.

“I don’t understand,” he said but he held me tight to him regardless. I shifted, handing him the photo that was clutched in my hand. He cursed as he looked at it. “We’ll figure this out.” Then I handed him the letter and he cursed again.

He didn’t say anything else as he dragged me down the road with him, straight to the security office. Antonio was there when we walked in and he jumped up, panicked at the sight of us.

“Call in the team,” Leven ordered. My pulse thundered in my ears and I felt like I might pass out. Panic clawed at me so intensely that I couldn’t think or function. Leven pulled me with him to a chair, settling me into his lap. I wasn’t sure how much time had passed but I could sense others coming in and moving around.

“What’s wrong?” Callum asked. His voice was panicked as he came running over. Leven caught him up to speed, I was still partly catatonic, my mind working through ways to process this.

“Why did he lie?” I whispered after another long pause of silence.

“Who, baby?” Nyx asked. He’d joined at some point apparently and it took me blinking several times before he even came in focus.

“Torryn. My old alpha. He told me she was dead, that they found her and buried her. He let me grieve,” I bit out, anger taking over the pain now. “Who fucking says that? He knew I lost my parents, he knew she was all I had, and that’s how he handled it?!”

“To keep you alive too, I would guess. Maybe he thought it was too dangerous? I’m not condoning it, just saying,” Leven said. There was no judgment or inflection in his tone, he was just talking facts from his perspective. “From what you said you were out, nearly died out there, and he knew you’d raze the earth to find her.”

“That or he fucking knew about it!” I growled, my anger near blinding now. Every single part of me was ready to rip him to shreds, make him pay for his deceit.

“That’s a possibility,” Callum sighed. “And one I considered too. From your stories, he wasn’t the most upstanding alpha.”

“But it worked in keeping you from following,” Leven reasoned. I didn’t want any part of his logic, though my anger remained with my former alpha, not my boyfriend.

“That doesn’t make it right. Because now after all this time, who the fuck is looking for her?! Not a damn soul!”

“Breathe, little wolf. We’re going to find her. I’ve got Antonio on the visuals now. Maybe we can get more information from Ava now that she would have a good reason to share. Hell, I’ll put an alert out to the alphas I’m allied with. We’ve got resources, you just have to give me time.”

“What if she doesn’t have time?” I countered in defeat. But there was no challenge there, I knew that he was right. I could run off guns blazing, but where would I even go to start looking? “Do I go back home? Confront him?”

“No,” Callum said softly. “That wouldn’t yield you answers. Hell, you’d probably challenge the guy and then we’d be in a world of trouble.”

“True,” I sighed. “I just… don’t get it.”

“And you likely won’t,” Nyx said gently. “People are fucked up sometimes. And you didn’t have the most reliable pack to start with.”

“True,” I sighed. “On another note, this feels like a big move for the tracker. His final hand. That can’t be good.”

Callum clenched his hands into fists. “No, it’s not. I thought the same thing. But unfortunately, it looks like we watch and wait.”

Nyx frowned. “Has anyone asked Ava about the witches?”

I shook my head. “No, I didn’t push. But that’s a good point. If that keeps us all safe, she’d be willing to share. If she even knew.”

“Where did you find all this?” Callum asked me.

“Dave called to say my truck was ready so I ran into Leven’s and that old tiny room to find my wallet since I hadn’t needed it in a while. Then when I was searching my bed, it fell out. Then you know the rest,” I summarized in a huge rambling breath.

“So he broke back in again,” Leven said in an icy tone. “He’s getting cocky and reckless.”

“Good, that means he’s more likely to slip up,” Nyx added. Even his smile had gone to borderline sinister.

“Can someone come with me to get my truck?” I asked quietly.

“I can,” Leven promised. “Nyx, you come too so someone can ride back with her.”

“Good plan,” he agreed. “Callum, go talk to Ava since she trusts you now. See if you can find anything out about the witches.”

“All right,” the alpha agreed without even realizing that Nyx was handing out orders. “Keep her safe,” he said that to the other guys before coming over and brushing a kiss over my forehead then walking out.
