“Let’s go get my baby,” I sang out, letting the small pocket of joy stick with me. They smiled, though every ounce of happiness we pretended to have was now tainted. They knew it was an act just like I did, but we were trying. I had a feeling none of us would truly relax until this tracker was in custody or dead. I wasn’t even picky about which option. Though if we caught him now, we might find some answers.

The somber mood stuck around as we drove into town, but the closer we got, the more excited I was. It was so stupid but having my truck out of commission for so long had really bothered me, this felt like a reunion, and I clung to the serotonin it was giving me.

Leven barely parked before I was rushing inside. The guys protested but I couldn’t even be bothered to listen, they were on my heels regardless.

“Dave! She’s done?!” I called out excitedly. My heart stopped when Dave didn’t turn around or move away from his spot slumped over the hood. Then my eyes dipped to the blood on the floor. It was a small puddle, but it couldn’t have been good. “Dave?”

Commotion behind me had me spinning on my heels, gasping as I saw Nyx and Leven walking in the door, but the tracker hidden in the shadows just inside it. He hit them with something, both men dropping like rocks. The wild look in their eyes told me the sadistic bastard paralyzed them, forcing them to watch him take me. Because I knew that was the only option here. Without thought, I shifted, clothes shredding as I took off toward the back of the shop. The back door was open wide, something Dave does to bring in a breeze. I heard him sprinting after me, but I didn’t look back, didn’t stop, instead I ran for my fucking life. I headed instinctively back to my pack, needing to get Callum so he could help the others. Fear gripped at me, crushing my chest under it but I didn’t let it stop me from moving forward, desperation overpowering everything else.

The gate was in sight. I was so close. Part of me considered shifting now and screaming for help, but it would slow me down and I wouldn’t be able to scream if he reached me.

A large mass hit me, pinning me to the ground and knocking every bit of air from my lungs. This time I did shift, not caring that gravel dug into my naked skin.

“Help!” I screamed. “Callum!”

But it was too late. My captor shifted, impossibly with his clothes on still. He reached into his pocket to grab something and I used that distraction to scramble away. But before I even could the world tilted on its axis and it felt like I was being wrenched into the afterlife, a cold, hollow feeling surrounding me for a moment before we were in a cabin. He moved off of me then and I scrambled away, my back hitting the wall as I tried to relearn how to breathe.

“Don’t bother screaming or running, this place is spelled,” he said in a dry voice. He tossed me a white dress that I immediately recognized and no fucking part of me wanted to pull that on. But the alternative was sitting naked on the dirty floor with my stalker. I hated that the small space smelled too strongly of his unkempt stench but I hated being vulnerable even more.

He smirked as I pulled it on, like he’d truly won something here. My eyes tracked every movement as he went casually about his business, pretending that this was an everyday thing. Then again, it seemed it was.

“Where’s my fucking sister?” He smirked and turned to me, showing me the depths of how fucked up he truly was. The dull gray eyes now held sick delight.

“They are going to love breaking you, little wolf.” My stomach rolled at the use of my nickname. And he fucking knew, his malicious laughter booming in the small space as my face twisted into a grimace.

“You don’t get to call me that. What the fuck is your issue. Why me? Because I fucking told you to leave me alone?”

“No, because it’s my job and I’m paid handsomely for it. They give me a target, I track them down, deliver, then get paid. Plus, I do so love playing with you helpless wolves.”

“I’m not fucking helpless. If you need magic to win, then are you really winning?” He narrowed his eyes at my accusation. “Sounds like you’re overcompensating to me.” He started to growl, then turned it into a cocky smile.

“My bank account says otherwise,” he mused as he grabbed a phone off the table. It was sitting in a stack of several phones, likely all burners.

“Where’s my sister?”

“Hush. You’ll see her soon enough,” he snapped. Apparently I was starting to annoy him. Good. After tapping away, he held the phone to his ear. “Package acquired. When is delivery?” He nodded several times like they could fucking see him through the phone then let out a breath. “Fine. Two days, no more or I will kill her.”

He hung up and turned to me with a smile that said he had me right where he wanted me. But all I heard was I had two days to figure this shit out and get to safety.

“Plot all you want. You’re no match for the magic I have,” he promised me. “And if you escape, I’ll kill your pack one by one while they sleep until the only ones left are your three men, leaving them to grieve you and an entire life lost, knowing they couldn’t protect their people or their mate.”

I ignored his taunts, knowing damn well they’d maim him by then. “Why did you let Ava go?”

“She was useless to the pack, they wanted to kill her but offered her to me as payment. They meant for me to keep her here and… do what I want with her.” His smile turned back to that disgusting psychotic one that sent a shiver down my spine. “I saw it more fitting to use her as a pawn, a failsafe if I needed it. Everyone has a role, it’s all strategy.” The fact he was telling me all this was proof he thought I’d never get out of here alive. And I was starting to doubt it myself as well. He was playing a long drawn-out game and in the end, he had won.

But despair was the last thing I could or should give into. I had to play his game with him, and while I was here, I intended to get every bit of info from him that I could.

“What’s the pack’s name?” I asked.

He glanced over at me, thinking it over then huffing out a laugh. “These answers won’t prove useful to you.”

“Then answer them, at least give me that,” I argued. “Before you send me to be a breeder.” His smile grew at that word.

“I see our wounded wolf found her voice. The charm wears off eventually.” He shrugged.

“Fine. Where is the pack?”

He said nothing again, humming softly to himself like he hadn’t a care in the world. It sent a flash of anger through me and I nearly shifted, my emotions less in control than I thought.
