“You sure it won’t take long?”

Jacintha nodded, shoulders caving as her heart raced. Palms wet, Jacintha sniffled as she finally met his eyes.

“Positive.” She patted the space on the bed next to her. The sound of her heart drumming against her rib cage rang loudly in her ears. “I’m… I’m pregnant, Elite.” Jacintha held her breath, gulping down a breath full of fear in an attempt to keep from turning into a puddle of sweat and regret right before him. The second the words left her lips, she wanted to flee… or to say it was a joke.

Except it wasn’t.

Her pregnancy, wanted yet unexpected, was very much real.

Elite’s shoulders slumped as his expression drew blank. His mouth opened and closed before he answered her with a small nod. Leaning forward, Elite placed his hands on his knees. Jacintha placed her trembling hand in the center of his back, but he stood quickly, removing himself from her reach.

“Are you sure?” His monotone voice was the dagger it took to slow her palpitating heart down.

“Yes. I took a couple of home tests, and I made an appointment for Monday.”

Elite’s smile was unkind before it turned flat—lips pinched. Tight. His eyes narrowed. Expression hardening, Elite’s hands formed into fists.

“You cheated on me,” came out as a statement, not a question, but Jacintha’s head began to shake rapidly.

“Wh–what? N–no. I—”

“Don’t fucking lie to me, Jah.” Closing the space between them with his quick stride, his hands wrapped around her neck, and he used it to lift her up from the bed. Jacintha’s nails went to his wrists, clawing in an attempt to be free. Heels lifting from the floor, she closed her eyes, accepting what she was sure would be death at the hands of her husband. “I know you cheated on me, because I had a vasectomy a month before our wedding day.”

Jacintha’s eyes popped open. The weakness that allowed her to succumb to Elite’s fate for her immediately became replaced with strength—strength to knock him the fuck out just to wake him up and ask him what the hell he’d just said! Jacintha wiggled against him, unsuccessfully able to break free. His grip around her neck was too tight for her to speak, causing her words to scream at her within her mind. Elite’s mouth twisted, eyes growing darker as they stared into hers.

He was going to kill her.

Right here.

Right now.

Jacintha’s eyes fluttered as her legs flapped. She only had one hope—kicking him hard enough for him to release her or at least loosen his grip on her neck. With all the strength she could muster, Jacintha lifted her left leg and kneed Elite between his thighs. He didn’t waver, only deciding within himself to let her go. Elite dropped her onto the bed, grumbling under his breath as she coughed and clutched her neck.

Tears fell, but it wasn’t because of her sadness. No. There wasn’t an ounce of sadness running through her veins. They were, however, flowing with rage and embarrassment that she wanted to spew onto him as her fists reigned.

But Jacintha was no fool.

She was no match for Elite’s strength.

Jacintha’s hand ran down her throat as the last of her scratchy coughs permeated the room.

“You did what?” Her raspy voice was barely above a whisper. Jacintha watched him pull open the second drawer on the right of their dresser, snatching boxers and a white t-shirt out. “Elite!” she yelled, coughing again.

“Fuck you, Jah. This ain’t even about me right now. This is about you breaking our vows and having sex with another man. And you obviously let him cum in you because you carrying his fucking baby!”

Elite turned toward her, causing Jacintha to scurry up the middle of the bed and rest against the headboard.

“How could you do this to me?” she whispered, tears finally falling. Jacintha chuckled, wrapping her arms around her legs. “You lied!” she screamed, rocking back and forth. “You never took this marriage seriously. You lied.” The second time, it came out as a whimper, emotions bouncing from one to the next. “You used me. All you did was use me!” Leaping from the bed, she rushed over to him, connecting her fist with the back of his head.

Elite used one hand to cradle the place she’d connected her fist with while the other reached for any part of her that he could find as he turned in her direction. With a handful of her hair, Elite pulled her into his chest.

“Webothlied.” His teeth gritted before he allowed his lips to form a smug smile. “I lied about giving you kids because I wanted to be sure our marriage would last, and you lied when you said you’d be faithful. While I planned to undo what I’d done when the time was right, ain’t no coming back from you cheating and trying to pin another nigga’s baby on me.”

Elite tossed her across the room and onto the floor. As angry as he appeared, his eyes ballooned when her body connected with the railing of their bed. Within seconds, he went from angry to concerned, as if he’d been possessed when he flung her body. Jacintha cried out in pain as she grabbed her back and stomach, praying the impact did nothing to harm her baby.

“Jah…” He was on her in two long steps, kneeling and trying to lift her by her shoulders. “I’m sor—”

“Don’t touch me! Just get the hell away from me!” she sobbed, pushing his hands away.
