Extending his leg on the bed, Blaze reached for his immobilizer so he could go to the bathroom and clean the wound before dressing it and taking some medicine. His lying about his pain so Denali would take care of him was about to bite him in the ass, because after Clynisha’s stunt, he was going to need her help for real.

Elite

As Elite staredat the house where his father lived, he questioned if closure and forgiveness were worth what he was about to feel. But whatwashe about to feel? Last year, Elite would have sworn he was going to feel anger and the desire to kill his father. Now, Jacintha’s actions had him looking at life through a different lens, and with that lens, everything wasn’t so black and white.

With a deep exhale, Elite checked the time. It was a little after five in the evening. He hadn’t spoken to Greg yet—all communication had been done through Supreme. A part of him wanted to say fuck it and just go home, but his spirit urged him to get out of the car.

Looking around the neighborhood, Elite couldn’t help but be impressed. The large home was three times as big as the tiny apartment Greg was raising Elite and Supreme in. It seemed his life had gotten better without his wife and children. Not wanting to think that way, Elite shook his head and got out of the car. He looked around the cove once more before heading to the front door, taking note of the well-maintained lawn in the process.

After knocking, Elite cupped his hands in the center of him and stepped back. He had no idea what he was about to walk into or how his father would respond to what he had to say. These kinds of things were best handled with his brother at his side, but this was something Elite would have to handle on his own. At thirty-four years old, this would be the first time he truly felt like a man who stood on his own, and that feeling had a chill shooting down his spine despite the warmth of the early April weather.

“Who is it?” was asked from the other side of the door, and Elite’s head tilted instantly. He wasn’t sure where he’d heard it from, but the voice was very familiar.

Like all Black people, Elite didn’t like saying his name when asked that question, but he couldn’t say his usual, ‘it’s me’, because who would me be to this woman?

“Elite,” he supplied quickly before clenching his jaw.

The door swung open, and the sight of Denali made him smile immediately, but it quickly turned into a frown.

“Don’t tell me you live here,” Elite pleaded. “You’re not Greg’s daughter, are you?”

Denali chuckled, showing him a beautiful white smile. One that complemented her natural glow effortlessly.

“No. I’m the tutor and babysitter. And you are?”

“Elite?” Elite’s head lifted toward the voice calling his name. It belonged to a middle-aged woman cautiously making her way behind Denali. “It’s a pleasure to meet you. I’ve heard… so much about you.”

Unsure how to respond to that, Elite confirmed, “Cassie?”

Cassie nodded, stepping to the side of Denali and extending her hand for Elite to shake. “Yes, come on in.”

As he stepped into the home, Denali didn’t bother moving back. She was just a couple of inches shorter than him. Without heels, her forehead was at his chin. Denali looked up at him, biting down on her bottom lip as he sized her up.

Her cinnamon brown skin tone had him licking his lips. She had dark brown eyes, a round nose, and pouty full lips. Lips that looked like a heart as they silently lured him in. Denali’s hair was long, dropping to her waist. He didn’t see any lace, but that didn’t mean it was her real hair. Elite would be impressed if it was, though. All he could imagine was running his fingers through her hair as she laid against his chest. And she smelled just as good today—light, airy, and soft.

“You two… know each other?” Cassie asked, noticing how difficult it was for them to take their eyes off each other.

“Nah, but I’m trying to get to know her,” Elite answered, causing Denali to blush.

“I’ll give you all some privacy,” Denali granted, turning and heading up the stairs.

His eyes lowered to those hips and thighs… that apple shaped ass. He shook his head and licked his lips. Denali was a rare breed. Elite could tell that already.

Cassie cleared her throat and squeezed the back of her neck as she rocked on her heels. “She’s great.”

“I bet.”

She laughed, taking his hand into hers and leading her further into the home as if she knew him. “Would you like a tour? Your father was just getting out the shower when you rang the doorbell. He’s been so nervous about this.”

“Nah,” Elite declined. “I don’t intend to stay long.” Or even return, for that matter, but she didn’t need to know all that.

Elite did, however, take in the warmth of the décor in the living room. It looked like a typical family living room. Large, neutral colored furniture. Several smaller chairs for gatherings. An entertainment station that was covered with family pictures and trophies. He walked over, looking at the pictures of two girls in various stages of life.

He had more children?

Of course,he’d had more children.
