Greg chuckled. “Yeah, but it’s for your birthday. She probably doesn’t want you to do anything.”

Shrugging, Elite pulled his phone out as it vibrated in his pocket. His excitement grew at the sight of Denali’s name. He was supposed to meet her when she was done with her errands to show her the building next to his. Elite had completed the purchase a couple of days before, and he’d been anxious to show her what he’d been up to.

“Hello?” he answered as he stood.

“Hey, babe. Where are you?”

“At Pop’s and Cassie house. You about done with your errands?”

“Yeah. Did you still want me to meet you?”

“Yeah. You can come over here and I’ll drive you.”

“Okay, baby. I’ll see you soon.”

“Aight.”

After he disconnected the call, Avalon asked, “Was that Denali? I still can’t believe she’s your girlfriend.”

“I’m too old for a girlfriend. Denali is my lover.”

Avalon’s face twisted in confusion, and they all laughed.

“Don’t be telling my baby about no lovers. She’s not old enough for that,” Greg said after his chuckle died down.

“That’s what she is, though,” Elite reasoned.

Denali was his lover in more ways than one. Not just physically, but spiritually, mentally, and emotionally as well. She didn’t just love him; she provided a safe space for him to be vulnerable and love her purely as well.

Just thinking about it had him craving her even more. He hadn’t asked her to do anything special for his birthday, but she insisted. As they celebrated his life, Elite had a special gift for her on his birthday as well. He’d made an appointment to discuss having his vasectomy reversed.

There was no rush, but Elite wanted to make it clear what his intentions were with her—marriage and at least one or two babies. Amir and Kinsley were carving bigger holes in his heart on a daily basis and loving and caring for them made him want to experience being a father from the beginning.

Elite was so lost in his thoughts he hadn’t paid attention to anything that was going on around him until Denali was gripping his chin and kissing his lips. Sitting on his lap, she told him, “Try this,” as she held a cookie with a bite already taken out of it to his mouth.

“What is this?”

“Just taste it and tell me if you like it.”

Doing as she said, Elite allowed Denali to feed him the cookie. It was chocolate chip but not overly chocolatey like he liked. If he could, he’d just eat the batter without the chips.

“Yeah, that’s good as hell. What’s this for?”

“Your party. She’s going to use this batter and make you a personal cake. It doesn’t have too many chips, does it?”

Elite looked the cookie over intently with a shake of his head. “Nah, that looks perfect. You ready to get outta here?”

“Yeah. We’re coming back here for dinner?”

“Yeah. You wanna stop and get the kids before we come back?”

“Yes, that works. Yashika has to work tonight anyway. She really called and cursed me out because she hasn’t seen my kids in like ten days.”

Elite chuckled as they headed out. Denali had gotten her mom’s club together and it had been running smoothly for the past couple of weeks. With their arrangement, Denali had more freedom but also the opportunity to see her kids enjoy themselves with other children their ages. Every week, the couple came up with one or two creative activities to do when it was Denali’s turn to watch everyone, and so far, they’d been having a blast.

“Can I get a hint about what we’re going to see?”

“If I give you a hint, you’ll be able to figure out what it is.”
