One year later…

Sincere,

I hopeyou’re not too spooked to get this letter from me, but I wanted to write it and have it delivered to you exactly one year after my death. It is my hope that you’ve released me from your heart and began to heal. Honestly, I hope you’re in a healthy relationship by now. Even though I know no woman will take my place in your life, I don’t want you to close your heart for good. I pray you’ve found another woman to love and be loved by in a different way than what you shared with me. Someone that will help you enjoy the next level in your life. Someone that will give you babies and all the puppies you can stand. My love for you cannot be contained, even in death. I pray you feel my love covering you with God’s on a daily basis. I will wait for you in heaven, my love, and I’m sure your soul will immediately find mine. I’ll be done sharing you at that point, so whoever you’re with will have to be ready to catch these heavenly hands! Lol! I love you, baby, forever and always.

Faith

Sincere laughed aloud oncehe’d reached the end of Faith’s letter. He’d come to her grave to read it, needing to feel as close to her as possible. Even in death, she found a way to make him smile and his heart light.

The past year had been a wild ride. Those first few months without her were hard, but having Keisha and Sophia made it manageable. He still missed her like crazy but finally had enough peace to accept life without her.

Even though he hadn’t planned on dating anytime soon, Sophia had managed to keep his heart warm. She was being patient with him and giving him time to not feel guilty over moving on quickly. Faith may have given him permission to love again, but his heart had to as well. No matter what, he and Sophia would be tied together for life. A drunken night of expressed emotions led to an intense lovemaking session, where their first child was conceived. And it was the fact that he would soon be a father to a little boy that motivated Sincere even more to heal.

After kissing Faith’s tombstone, he whispered, “I’ll love again.”

He sighed with a shake of his head. “I think you would approve of Sophia. She’s like you in some ways and like Keisha in others. She’s being patient with me while I process everything.” Sincere paused. “I know she deserves better than being a friend who’s having my baby, and I really do like her. I just haven’t been able to force myself to commit because of you. And I know, I know, that’s exactly what you wanted me not to do.”

He smiled. “I guess this letter is confirmation that you knew me better than anyone else. And I promise you that I’m going to do right by her and my son. Once he’s born, I’m going to commit to Sophia and see where that takes us.” Sincere’s eyes watered but he dried them quickly. “She’ll never be you… no woman will ever be you… but a part of me feels like she was sent to me from God and you. You better not have found her for me, either.”

He chuckled again. “Your controlling stubborn ass probably did, and she won’t tell me. Every time I ask, she just smiles and shakes her head.” His head tilted as his smile lingered. “Thank you,” he whispered, catching a tear before it fell. “Forever and always.”

After kissing her tombstone one last time, Sincere walked away… feeling lighter than he ever had after a visit. Looking toward the sky, he smiled. He might not have had Faith, but he had a woman who was down for him, a son on the way, and everything else he could ask for. That reflection had his smile widening as he continued toward his car. Though he never thought he’d ever find happiness without his wife, Sincere finally understood how much peace and happiness came from holding on to the love they shared in the past and being grateful for the love he would receive in the future.

The End!
