“Mom, I already told you…” My words die on my tongue as I open the door and see not my mother, but Treyton, standing on the other side. “What… What are you doing here?”

“I waited in the lobby for her to leave.”

“You just waited… in my lobby?”

He shrugs. “I felt bad for opening the door. Wanted to apologize.”

“You know what, don’t. I’m actually glad you opened the door. Gave me the opportunity to handle something I’ve been avoiding for most of my adult life.”

“Do I want to know?”

“Nope.” I grab his shirt and tug him inside the apartment, stepping past him to shut and lock the door.

When I turn around, he’s looking at me with both bewilderment and amusement.

“You okay there, Hamilton?” He arches a brow.

“Never better.” I step toward him, my hand latching around his neck as I pull his face down to mine. “I’m done existing in this perpetual protective bubble. I want to feel something real.”

“What are you saying?” he husks, his tongue darting out to wet his lips.

“Kiss me.”

The words barely make it past my lips before his mouth is on mine, and for the first time in a very long time, I stop thinking and start feeling.
