“More like, the woman I wanted to take wouldn’t return my phone calls.”

“You mean I’m not theonlyone avoiding you? Weird.” I bark out a laugh.

“Believe it or not, Hamilton, I don’t make it a habit of chasing women.”

“Yeah, okay.” I snort. “Because you were going to takemeto a charity event.” I roll my eyes.

“Actually, I was. But since your stubborn ass has been hell bent on holding a grudge, I opted to go alone.”

“You fucked me, then you abandoned me atyourbaseball function thatyouinsisted I go to with you.” I swallow hard, turning serious. “And you expect menotto be upset with you? I don’t know how things work in your world, Treyton.” I purposely don’t call him Trey, simply because I know it bothers him. “But in the real world, that kind of behavior is generally frowned upon.”

He dips down, his face so close I can feel his breath on my face.

“I panicked.” His expression softens. “I panicked,” he repeats.

This was not the response I expected.

“Why?” I whisper, the noise of the room a distant buzz.

“Because you made me feel…” He swallows. “Acertainway.”

“A bad way?” I sway back slightly, the alcohol swimming through my veins reminding me of its presence.

Treyton slips his arm around my back and secures me against him.

“A good way.” He grins.

“Then why blow me off?” My voice shakes.

He drops his forehead to mine.

“Because it scared the shit out of me.”

“What did? What could you possibly have to be scared of?”

“You.”

He presses his lips to mine, silencing my ability to ask any more questions. And as much as I want to fight it, as much as I want to prove that I can walk away from this man unscathed, I already know I can’t. And that I won’t.

He kisses me slow and deep, like we’re completely alone and not a single person is watching. And I revel in it. Soak in the thrill of his affection. Let it seep into my veins like it’s the sweetest drug, because there is no high like the one this man makes me feel.

I fought it in the beginning. Hell, a part of me is still fighting it. But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want this. Or that I didn’t want him.

“I’m taking you back to my place,” he groans, breaking the kiss.

Without warning, he dips down and hoists me over his shoulder. I immediately protest, feeling the cool breeze of the air conditioner kiss the backs of my thighs.

“Wait.” I lift myself up, putting my upper body a good two feet over his head. “I can’t leave Bonnie.” I look around and realize my best friend is nowhere to be found.

“Brown curls and bright pink lips?” he asks.

“How did you know?”

He shifts, causing me to topple back over his shoulder. Turning, he heads toward the exit. It isn’t until I look behind us that I realize nearly every eye in the room is on us.

Heat creeps up my neck and spills across my cheeks.

“Because I saw her go into the next room over with Beckett,” he tells me once we disappear around the corner.
