“I saw it in a movie once.”

“Then let’s do it.” I smile when she lifts her head up and gives me a questioning look.

“I can’t.” She shakes her head like it should be so obvious.

“Why not?” I ask. “We could go. There’s nothing stopping us.”

“I can’t leave Claire. And what about your mom?”

“Claire wouldn’t care and you know it. She’d want you to go. And my mom will be fine. She has plenty of people to help take care of her. Besides, we can go for a couple of weeks, maybe a month. You know, while you still feel good enough to go.” I shove away the sick feeling that forms in the pit of my stomach at the thought of when she gets to the point that she’s not well enough.

“You’re serious?” A smile snakes across her mouth.

“I am. Let’s do it.” I shift upward, taking her with me. “We can do it exactly as you said. We can rent a van with a mattress in the back. We can drive from state to state, sleep under the stars. The weather is getting warmer so now is the perfect time.”

“It sounds amazing, Abel, but I just don’t think I can. I don’t have the money and I need to stay close to my doctors.”

“I have the money. Let me do this for you. Let me give you this adventure. There are doctors everywhere. And you said so yourself, there’s nothing they can do for you now.” I swallow back the emotion that filters into my voice. “Let’s do it.”

“Okay,” she agrees, laughing when I pull her on top of me and hug her to my chest.

“I’ll make all the arrangements. We should leave tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow?” She pulls back, eyes wide with surprise.

“We don’t know how many tomorrows we have left together, Fin. I don’t want to waste a single one.”

“Okay, we leave tomorrow,” she agrees, tears in her eyes and a wide smile on her face. “I love you, Abel,” she whispers, lowering her face to mine.

“I love you too,” I say against her lips just as her mouth closes over mine.
