“And that’s why you love her,” Abel interjects.

“Lord help me, but it’s true.” The man’s eyes slide to me. “And who do we have here?”

“Joe, this is Finley.”

“Well hello there, Miss Finley.” He gives me a toothy grin.

“Hello.” I smile politely.

“You two better get inside. The show starts soon.” His attention returns to Abel as he steps to the side and gestures for us to pass.

I give Abel a questioning look.

“Thanks, Joe. We’ll see you later.”

Abel pulls me past the security guard and inside the venue before leading me down a hallway that opens into the main concert hall. Several people have already begun to gather around the stage.

“Okay, so you’re on a first name basis with the security guard and you didn’t need tickets to get us into a sold out show. What are you not telling me?”

“Perks of knowing people.” He winks, gesturing around the room. “So, what do you think?”

I look around the incredible space, taking in the gold accents and eclectic décor.

“It’s awesome,” I say, smiling as my eyes scan the room.

“It is, isn’t it?” He steps around me and quickly helps me out of my coat before draping it over his forearm. “I’m gonna take our jackets to coat check. You want something to drink?”

“Sure.” I nod.

“Anything in particular?”

“Surprise me.” I shrug.

“You got it.” He flashes me that incredible one dimpled smile before turning to walk away. I keep my gaze on his backside longer than is probably acceptable before forcing myself to look away.

Making my way closer to the stage, I turn and look behind me where two balconies wrap the back of the room.

I feel so completely out of my element, but in a weird way it’s oddly comforting. It feels good, doing something simply because I want to and not overthinking the why or what happens next.

It’s so different from how I’ve lived my life up to this point. I don’t know if it’s because I just found out I have cancer or Abel, but suddenly everything feels different. And weirdly enough, I’d bet on the latter. Because while yes, I know I’m sick, I think deep down I’m still in denial about the whole thing. It doesn’t seem real. I mean, I feel fine. How can I be dying when I feel completely normal?

“Hey.” I jump slightly when Abel appears next to me, a fruity looking cocktail in one hand and a beer in the other.

“Hey.” I smile, taking the drink when he extends it to me. “Thank you.” I hold the glass up to inspect the contents. “What is it?”

“Blue Hawaiian,” he tells me, gesturing to the drink. “Thought you should expand your horizons.”

“Did you now?” I smirk, pressing the straw between my lips before taking a long sip, humming the instant the sweetness hits my tongue.

“Good?”

“Delicious.” I nod enthusiastically.

“Next you should try a Long Island. I bet you’d really like those.”

“Are you trying to get me drunk?” I smart playfully.

“One can only hope.” He laughs, the sound rumbling through his chest.
