“There’s that word again...Complicated.”

“It’s true. I didn’t want to drag you into what I have going on. We spent an incredible night together. I wanted to remember it that way and not have it be tainted byotherthings.”

“Other things,” he repeats slowly.

“I came to your show,” I blurt, not sure why I feel the need to tell him that.

“What show?”

“The one at Trolley House?”

“Wait? You were there? And you didn’t say anything?”

“I didn’t want you to know I was there. I knew I was leaving the next day and that seeing you wouldn’t have changed anything. But I wanted to be there.”

“And what did you think?”

“You were incredible, just like I knew you would be.”

“I can’t believe you were there.”

“I wanted to hear you play at least once. And not in your living room, but up on stage.”

“You say that like you’re never going to get the chance to see me play again.”

“At the time I wasn’t sure I would.”

“Okay, now I’m really fucking curious. What the hell is going on with you? Where are you... Really?”

“I can’t tell you that.”

“Why not?” he groans.

“Because then you would come looking for me?”

“And that would be such a bad thing, why?”

“Because I need to take care of some things first.” I sink my head further into the pillows and look up at the dark ceiling. “How did you find me anyway? When you showed up at my sister’s apartment. How did you find out where I live?”

“This is going to sound really bad.” He laughs nervously. “A buddy of mine knows a PI. I paid him to do a little digging.”

“Wait, you hired a private investigator to track me down?” I sit straight up in bed.

“It’s not like you gave me much of a choice.”

“So what else did you find out about me?” Nervous energy pumps through my veins.

“Nothing really. He found out where you worked and was able to track your address through the DMV. Once I had that I really didn’t need to know anything else. I wasn’t trying to invade your privacy, I just wanted to be able to see you again. God, even saying it out loud makes me sound completely fucking mental.”

“I don’t think you’re mental.” I smile, relaxing back into the bed. “I think it’s kinda sweet. That you went through so much trouble.”

“Trouble that I could have avoided had you just left me your number.”

“I couldn’t make it that easy on you,” I joke, knowing that my intention was never to play games with him. I thought leaving the way I did would be easier. For everyone.

“Your sister seems nice.”

“She is. She’s the best.”
