“Visitors,” he answers simply, wrapping his hand around my forearm as he ushers me along quickly.

“What kind of visitors?”

“The kind you’ll be damn lucky if you never have to meet.”

The way he says it makes me instantly uncomfortable.

“Is everything okay?” I ask, not really sure why I care.

“It will be.” He tugs open the door and guides me inside. The young guy from the dock last night meets us in the foyer. “Take her to her room. Boss wants no one in or out.”

“Understood.” He nods, his overgrown dark hair falling into his stark blue eyes as he does.

Like luggage being passed off, Niko releases my arm and the other man takes it.

“Come on.” He tugs me toward the stairs as Niko runs in the opposite direction. “I’m Dimitri, by the way,” he tells me on our way upstairs, offering me an awkward but seemingly friendly smile, two matching dimples appearing on both his cheeks.

He’s a good-looking guy, reminding me more of a college frat boy than a member of a dangerous cartel. But compared to Mateo, he’s nothing more than a peach fuzzed face boy.

“Mila,” I manage to push out past my suddenly dry throat.

Something is happening and I’d bet just about anything it has to do with my father... Or me.

“Sorry about that shit with Pauly last night.”

I throw him a sideways glance, mentally sizing him up. He’s smaller than most of the other men I’ve seen on the island, standing only a couple inches taller than my five-foot four stature. I’d say he doesn’t weigh more than one-fifty soaking wet. But something still tells me he’s not someone you want to mess with. While he seems more normal, if that’s even a word you can use for someone in a freaking cartel, there’s also something dangerous about him at the same time.

“Thanks,” I murmur, not really sure what to say to that.

It isn’t until we reach my room that I speak again, turning to face him in the doorway.

“Do you know what’s going on?” I ask, not actually expecting him to tell me anything.

“Sorry.” He shakes his head side to side.

“Right. You can’t tell me,” I grumble, stepping the rest of the way inside my room before swinging the door closed. I hear the lock click moments later.

Letting out a loud sigh of frustration, I cross the room and flop face down on top of the bed.

If they’re going to keep me prisoner until whatever they’re planning is over, is it too much to ask to be kept in the loop?

Obviously so, considering no one will tell me anything.

I groan into the comforter, wishing like hell I could go back to my normal life. But deep down even I know that if I live through this, nothing about my life will ever be normal again.

IDON’T REALIZE I’VEdozed off until the door opening startles me from sleep. I shoot up in bed, looking down at the thin cover up that’s twisted around my body.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you.” Dimitri walks into the room, closing the door behind him. “I thought you might be hungry, so I had one of the guys make you a sandwich.” He offers me what looks like a peanut butter and jelly on a napkin and a cup of milk.

“Where’s Norma?” I ask, taking the sandwich and milk from him before setting it on the bedside table.

“She’s in her room. Boss doesn’t like her wandering around when unfriendlies are present.”

“Unfriendlies?” I get out on a yawn as I stretch out my arms and back, stiff from the weird position I fell asleep in.

“Members of another cartel.”
