“There’s members of another cartel here?” My heartrate kicks up speed. “Why?”

“Business,” he says simply.

“Isn’t this island supposed to be a secret? Doesn’t it kind of defeat the purpose if people know how to find it?” I ask.

“They’re bagged.”

“Bagged?”

“They put bags over their heads during the trip so they can’t identify the location.”

“Oh.” I nod. “Right.”

Sometimes my ignorance about this world frustrates even me. If this is what I came from, if this is the world I was born into, shouldn’t I know more?

Then again, it’s not like I had the slightest inkling that my father was some cartel lord and one day my life would hang in the balance because of it.

“You need anything else?” he asks, rocking back on his heels.

“No, I’m good.” I yawn again, not sure why I feel so freaking tired.

“Okay, I’ll be right outside if you need me.” He turns, heading for the door.

“Hey, Dimitri,” I call after him.

“Yeah?” He stops just shy of the door.

“Can I ask you something?” I don’t wait for him to answer before asking, “Why are you here?”

“Pardon?” He seems confused by my question.

“It’s just... you don’t really seem like the others.”

“I really shouldn’t.” He hesitates.

“Come on.” I bat my lashes dramatically, though I highly doubt anything I do would persuade him. “It’s not like I’m asking for inside secrets. I just want to know aboutyou.”

I can see the indecision on his face and am honestly a little surprised when he starts speaking.

“My father was one of Diego’s most trusted lieutenants.”

So his father worked for Mateo’s father. A lieutenant. I have no idea how the hierarchy works, but I’m guessing that means he was pretty high up in the cartel. But where does Dimitri come into that? Is it common practice to bring your children into the same life? I’m about to ask when something he said pops out at me.

“Was?”

“Mateo killed him when he found out he leaked information about some shipments to the Herrera’s after Diego was killed. Guess he thought he was laying the groundwork to jump ship. You see how well that turned out for him.” He shrugs.

The look on my face probably says it all, but I still manage to vocalize my next question.

“So you’re here against your will?” I guess, knowing I could be way off base.

“Not exactly. I volunteered.”

“What do you mean you volunteered?”

“Cartels, especially Columbian Cartels, live by a very strict code. Betrayal doesn’t only mean death for you, it means death for your entire family. It’s how they keep the men in line,” he explains. “But Mateo... He’s different. If he were his father, I’d be rotting in the ground somewhere. But he gave me the opportunity to make up for my father’s misdeeds.”

“How old are you?”
