“Careful. You might hurt my feelings talking like that.” He grins at me.

“That would require you to have actual feelings.” I mean it as a joke, but I can tell by the darkening of his expression that he doesn’t find my statement the least bit humorous.

“Is that really what you think of me?” He sits upright, taking me with him.

I tug the sheet up to my chin, covering my bare chest.

“No.”

“You have no idea what it took for me to open up to you tonight, do you? Some of the things I told you I haven’t told anyone before. Not even Niko. This isn’t what I do.” He gestures between us. “I don’t ever do this. If I want to fuck, I find a woman, I fuck her, and then I leave. It’s that simple. I don’t ever take the time to get to know her. And I certainly don’t put her pleasure or feelings above my own... Ever.”

The thought of Mateo with other women shouldn’t make my stomach churn.

“Right... I... Er. I’m sorry.”

Without a word, he swings his legs over the side of the bed and stands. Bending down, he grabs his pants and quickly starts to dress.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to offend you.”

“You didn’t.” His voice is cold, causing dread to pool in my stomach.

“Really? Because that’s not how it seems.”

“Look.” He blows out a heavy breath before turning to face me, tugging his shirt over his head. “Last night was fun...”

“But,” I interject, feeling a but coming on.

“But I need to keep my head right and I can’t do that when I’m around you.”

My heart sinks further.

“So that’s it? You’re going to spend the night with me then walk away like it never happened?”

He leans down, pressing his fists into the bed, his face so close to mine that his lips are only a whisper away. “It happened. I’m not going to forget it or pretend that it didn’t. But it doesn’t change what we’re doing here. You’re still my prisoner.”

“I haven’t forgotten.” The words come out dripping with disdain.

“Good.” He shoves off the bed, pushing himself upright. “I have to leave for a couple of days.”

“You’re leaving?” I hate how weak my voice sounds. How pitiful.

How did I become this girl?

A girl who gets kidnapped.

A girl who’s become a pawn.

A girl who lets down her guard and beds her enemy.

Because at the end of the day, Mateo is still my enemy. He’s right, last night didn’t change anything.

Only it did.

It changedeverything.

At least for me.

“I have some business I need to handle. I’ll be back in a couple of days. Dimitri is staying behind to guard you. If you need anything, let him know.” With that, he takes off toward the door.
