“Mateo,” I call after him but he doesn’t turn back until he’s standing in the open doorway.

I stare at him for a long moment, not sure what to say or why I called out after him. I guess in a way I just wanted to look at him one more time.

“Yeah?” He seems annoyed when I don’t say anything.

“Nothing.” I shake my head. “Never mind.”

“Right.” His features soften. “Try to get some sleep.”

“Yeah, like that’ll happen,” I mutter under my breath.

Seconds later, the door snaps closed behind him.

I collapse down onto the bed and stare up at the ceiling, my mind spinning over what happened. And not just the sex, but all of it. The way he tensed up when I clearly hit a nerve. The way he completely shut me out. The way he left.

Regret floods through my chest and angry tears boil to the surface.

How could I have been so stupid?

——

“MILA, ARE YOU AWAKE?” I peek one eye open and then the other, my sleepy gaze going to the door as Dimitri steps inside. “Morning.” He smiles. “Or should I say afternoon.”

“What time is it?” I prop up on my elbows, yawning loudly.

I must have passed out at some point after Mateo left. Thankfully, I had the forethought to put on some clothes before I did. Kicking off the comforter, I watch Dimitri cross the room, not noticing the plate in his hand until he sets it on the bedside table.

“Almost two in the afternoon. You missed breakfast... And lunch. I thought maybe you’d be hungry.”

I glance over at the plate, my gaze focusing on what’s behind it.

“What is that?” I ask, sitting the rest of the way up.

“It’s just turkey and cheese. Norma made it for you.”

“No, not the sandwich.That.” I point at the small, digital clock.

“Oh, Mateo had me bring it up earlier. You were sleeping pretty soundly so I plugged it in, set it, and left it.”

He remembered...

“Thank you.” Although, in reality, the person I’m thanking isn’t actually here.

I know it’s small, but you don’t realize how frustrating it is having no way to tell time until you’re forced to live in a room without windows and have no way to track the sun’s progress. My first few days in here were torturous. I had no way of knowing what time it was or even what day.

“No problem.” Dimitri pulls my attention back to him.

“Did Mateo leave already?” I ask, hoping to thank him in person. Truth be told, I’m anxious to see him. To figure out where we stand after what happened last night and then this morning.

He nods. “A couple hours ago.”

“Any idea when he’ll be back?” I ask.

“Shouldn’t take more than a day or two, as long as he doesn’t run into any problems.”

“What kind of problems?”

He shakes his head. “You know I can’t tell you.” Once again a reminder that I’m on the outside.
