“How far into it are you?”
“Actually, I’m on my second pass,” I admit.
“Why?”
“Well, Dimitri only brought me the one book and since you asked me to stay in my room, it was either that or pace holes in the floor.”
“Are you feeling anxious?” He lifts his head just enough to glance up at me.
“A little. More than anything I feel stir crazy.”
“I’m sorry.” He settles back down on my chest.
“It’s okay. You’d think by now I’d be used to it.” I shrug.
“This will be over soon. One way or the other.” I don’t like the dark tone that seeps through his voice.
“Have you made any progress? With how my father knew what airfield you would be at?”
“No, but I’ve cleared the compound. Only ten of my most trusted men stayed behind.”
“And you’re sure it’s none of them?”
“Fuck,” he grumbles. “For all I know it could be all of them. But no, I don’t think so.”
“Do you think it’s safe... Clearing out all your men? What happens if my father finds us?”
“He won’t.”
“How can you be so sure?”
“Because my family has owned this island for nearly five decades and no one has ever discovered its location. Right now, it’s the safest place we can be.”
“I hope you’re right.” My fingers continue to glide through his hair, scratching gently at his scalp.
“Me too.” He lets out a deep exhale.
I want to ask how he keeps the island a secret. How so many men come and go yet no one knows the exact coordinates, but knowing he probably has his ways, I decide not to harp on the subject.
“I’m leaving in the morning.”
“Again?”
“I have shit that has to be handled.”
“And none of your men can do that?” I ask.
“Given the way things are going, I only trust myself to handle it.”
“Are you sure it’s safe?”
“No one knows I’m leaving this time. Well, other than Dimitri, Niko, and Ross, who will be accompanying me.”
“So who is staying with me?”
“Only Ross is going with me. Dimitri will stay behind, along with Niko, though given his condition I’m not confident there’s much he could do if anything went down.”
“And you trust Ross?”
