It has to be.

When Dimitri turns back to me, the look on his face causes my knees to shake.

“Go to your room, Mila. Lock the door and do not open it for anyone but me. Do you understand?” he instructs, pulling a phone from his pocket before punching in a number, his gaze sliding back up to me. “Your room. Now!” he screams, panic clear in his voice.

Without a word, I spin around and take off running, my heart beating so hard and fast I swear it’s going to pound straight out of my chest at any moment.

Niko’s dead...

But how?

Why?

I can’t process it.

Hell, I can’t even think as I round the corner and yank open my bedroom door, my feet faltering the instant I step inside.

Standing in the middle of the room is one of Mateo’s men. I’ve seen him around the compound a few times. He’s a pretty standard looking guy. Middle aged. American. Average build. Dirty blonde hair cut close to his scalp. A large tattoo covers his right forearm.

My mind struggles to remember his name, but I know that I know it.

But then my eyes dart to the gun he’s holding. The gun that is pointed directly at my chest, and all coherent thought leaves my body on a silent whoosh.

“Don’t scream.” He holds up his free hand and slowly lowers the gun. “I’m here to help you.”

“Help me?” I choke out.

He nods slowly. “You know who I am?”

“Danny?” I guess, pretty sure that’s what it is. “You’re one of Mateo’s men.”

He nods. “You’re in danger. I have to get you out of here...Now.” He quickly steps past me and looks both ways down the hallway. “Come on.” He reaches back, grabbing my forearm before tugging me out of the room.

“Where are we going? What’s going on?” My voice is shrill, fear etched into every single word.

“I’ve been given orders to get you out of here,” he tells me, pulling me so fast that I struggle to keep my balance.

“Orders... Orders from who?” I trip on the first step and nearly send both of us tumbling to the bottom of the stairs. Somehow he’s able to hold his balance, catching me mid-air.

“Do you want to live?” He pulls me upright and gets right in my face, his wild eyes boring into mine.

Is that even a question?

I swallow hard and nod.

“Then I need you to do exactly what I tell you. Do you understand me?”

I nod again.

“Good.” He takes off down the stairs, his hand wrapped tightly around my forearm as he pulls me through the foyer and out the front door.

Before I know it, we’re running down the beach. Only I have no idea what I’m running toward. Safety or danger.

Mateo said he left ten of his most trusted men behind. Which means, hemusttrust Danny. Which in turn means I should trust him too. Right?

But then I think of Niko...

Someone killed him.
