Someone slit his throat while he lay in bed recovering from three gunshot wounds and was unable to defend himself.

My chest burns and I close my eyes, trying to fight off the tears I feel forming.

When we reach the boat dock, Danny doesn’t stop. Raising his gun, he fires two rounds into the chest of the first guard who’s standing outside the building smoking a cigarette. The poor bastard never saw it coming.

I watch his body slump to the ground...

Dead.

I cover my mouth with my free hand, willing myself not to scream.

Seconds later, two more gun shots ring out, both hitting the second guard when he comes running out of the building. The first hits him in the side of the neck, the second directly in the forehead...

Dead.

“Come on.” Danny tugs my arm harder, forcing me down the dock.

“What... Why did you kill them?” I choke, tears streaming freely down my face. And then a thought occurs to me and I instantly freeze. Danny is moving so fast that when I stop, his hand loses its grip on my forearm. “You...” I take a step back as he whips around.

“We don’t have time for this. They’ll be here any second,” he growls, waving the gun at me.

“Who will be here?” My voice trembles.

“We have to go,” he insists, and for the first time I register the fear behind his light blue eyes.

“Where?” I tug my arm free when he tries to grab it. “Where are you taking me?”

“I’m trying to save you.”

“By killing Niko?” I take another step back. “You killed him, didn’t you? Why?”

“For fuck’s sake, get in the fucking boat.”

“No.” I shake my head, finding my courage from somewhere down deep. If I’m going to die, I won’t do it cowering and weak. I’ll do it fighting back. “If you’re going to shoot me, then shoot me. But I’m not going anywhere with you until you tell me what the hell is going on.”

He runs a hand through his hair, his eyes surveying the area behind me.

“I’m taking you to your father.”

“My father? But...you work for Mateo...” And then it hits me. “You’re the mole. The one that’s been leaking information to my father.” It’s not a question. I already know I’m right.

“Yes, which means we’re on the same side. Now will you please get in the boat?” He gestures to the vessel bobbing gently in the water.

Are we on the same side?

I’ve been through so much recently, seen so much, that the lines of the battlefield have started to blur and I no longer know which side of the line I’m standing on.

“Why did you kill Niko?” I demand to know.

“I needed the coordinates to the island. Niko is the only person that had them.”

“Why?”

“So I could relay that information to your father.”

“He knows where we are?”

“He does now.” He nods. “He and his men will be here within the hour. It’s my job to get you safely off this island before they arrive. Trust me, you don’t want to be here to see what happens next.”
