Had I not demanded answers, had I not refused to go until I got them, we would be off this island and on our way to my father right now. This whole nightmare would have been over.

Which begs the question—why didn’t I get on that boat?

“What did you tell him?” Mateo stands in front of Danny who’s likely only still standing because of the two men on either side of him, holding him upright. When he doesn’t answer right away, Mateo lands a hard punch to his cheek. I swear I hear the bone crack even though I’m several feet away.

“Mateo!” His eyes swing toward me and Dimitri as we approach and I watch his expression turn downright murderous.

“I told you to take her to her fucking room!” His voice is an eerie growl, one that sends chills spiraling straight down my spine.

“Esteban.” Dimitri pants like he’s out of breath. “He’s coming.”

His dark gaze swings from Dimitri, to me, and then back to Danny.

“He knows where we are?” He dips down, getting right in Danny’s face.

“Maybe next time you should choose who you trust more wisely,” he taunts, his voice strained. “All it took was a knife to his throat and Niko told me everything I needed to know.”

“Liar!” Mateo steps back, laying another hard blow to Danny’s face. I watch his head snap back then lull forward again, a smile now on his lips. “Why don’t you stick around and find out.” He lets out a menacing laugh.

Mateo looks back at me, uncertainty peeking through his rage filled features.

“He told you this?” he snaps at me, causing me to jump.

“Yes.” I nod, my voice trembling.

He stares at me for another long moment before pulling his gun from his holster and aiming it directly at Danny’s head. The men at his sides take a full step back. Without their assistance, he sways from side to side, barely able to stand on his own two feet.

“Why?” Mateo demands.

Danny knows what he’s asking without explanation.

“Because you’re weak.” He squares his shoulders. “If Diego could see you right now, he’d fucking kill you himself. You didn’t start this war and you sure as shit won’t be the one to finish it. Because you don’t have the balls to do what it takes. I chose to be on the winning side and you played right into my hands. You sent your men away. You left your only leverage defended by a man too weak to even defend himself and the other, no more than a child.” His eyes dart to Dimitri for a brief moment before going back to Mateo. “It was almost too easy. And now, you have an army closing in around you while you’re completely defenseless.”

Without warning, Mateo pulls the trigger, the sound vibrating off the walls around us. I watch as Danny’s body crumbles to the ground, the back side of his head blown completely open.

The world seems to shift on its very axis, making me feel unsteady on my feet. I sway from one side to the other. Bile rises in my throat so quickly that I barely have time to turn my head before I lose the contents of my stomach all over the ground.

Heaves continue to rake through my body which shakes so violently my joints ache.

I feel Dimitri next to me, hear his voice in my ear, but I can’t seem to process a single word he’s saying.

And then Mateo is there, standing in front of me, his hands firm on my biceps as he pulls me into an upright position.

“We have to go.”

His words sound too far away.

“Mila.” He shakes me harder.

“I think she’s going into shock.” Dimitri’s voice hits my ears.

The next thing I know, I’m being lifted from my feet, Mateo’s strong arms securing my body against his.

“Ross, gather the others. You know what to do,” Mateo says, his words vibrating from his chest. “Dimitri, go get Norma and meet me at the dock. We have to get Mila off this island.”

“Yes, boss.”

Footsteps scurry around us but I can’t seem to comprehend a single thing. All I can see is the back of Danny’s head exploding. All I can hear is the sound of the gun. All I can smell is death in the air.
