“Come on.” Dimitri tugs my arm. “Let’s get you inside.”

“No.” I pull away from his grasp. “I have to talk to Mateo.” My heart drums so loudly in my ears I can barely hear myself think.

“You know that can’t happen right now. Niko is dead. Blood has to be paid for with blood.”

“But he doesn’t understand!” My voice shoots up an octave.

“We have to go.” He grabs my arm again. “Come on.”

With a strength I didn’t know he possessed, he forces me to move.

My internal battle wages as we make our way up the beach.

Where do I stand?

With my father...

Or with Mateo...

I know my father is coming. Do I keep quiet and wait for it to happen or do I do something about it? I have to pick a side.

Am I in or am I out?

“Dimitri, wait...” I manage to pull out of his grasp before he can force me through the front door. “My father...” I swallow hard. “He’s coming.”

And there it is...

The battle lines are no longer skewed.

Rivera and Herrera.

A war of blood.

And I sided with the enemy.

“What do you mean he’s coming?”

“Niko. He gave the coordinates to Danny.”

“There’s no way.” He shakes his head in disbelief. “He would never betray Mateo.”

“Are you willing to bet your life on it?”

I see the indecision creep across his face.

“Fuck,” he mutters.

“We have to warn Mateo.”

He gives me a stiff nod. “Come on.”

Instead of going inside, he veers to the right, leading to the concrete path that wraps around the side of the building. I don’t have to ask where we’re going. I already know. The courtyard.

I quickly follow behind him, nerves tying my insides into knots.

When we round the corner and enter the courtyard, Danny’s is the first face I see. He wobbles side to side, blood pouring from his mouth and nose.

When I catch sight of his expression, something unpleasant washes over me... Guilt. Regret. I can’t quite pinpoint it, but for the first time I’m starting to wonder if I didn’t make a horrible decision by not going with him when he asked me to.
