“What the hell?” I pull my earbuds out of my ears. “Westin, what are you doing here?” I ask, confusion no doubt marring my face.

“You were just going to leave without saying goodbye?” He fakes offense and places his hand over his heart.

“Pretty sure you’re the one that left without saying goodbye,” I snap.

“Sorry about that.” The smile falls from his lips. “I had an early morning business meeting and didn’t want to wake you.”

I completely bypass his excuse as I turn in my seat to face him straight on. “No worries. I was actually glad you were gone.”

“Ouch.”

“Last night was a mistake.”

“Last night was a lot of things but mistake is not one of them.” He disagrees.

“I drank too much.”

“You seemed pretty sober to me.” He counters.

“How did you know I would be here?” I veer away from the conversation, feeling like I’m getting nowhere.

“You told your boyfriend on the phone last night.”

“So you were eavesdropping,” I accuse, not bothering to correct him on the boyfriend part.

“Not my fault if you were talking loud enough for anyone within a half a mile radius to hear you.”

“I think that’s a bit of an over exaggeration.”

“Is it?” He gives me a knowing look.

Okay, so maybe I wasn’t being quiet. Then again, I also didn’t know he was standing just a few feet from me. If I had, maybe I would have been more discreet.

“Why are you here, Westin?”

“I wanted to see you off.”

“If we were friends, maybe I could believe that. But we’re not. So I'm going to ask you one more time and if you don't give me an honest answer, I'm going to tell security that you’re harassing me.” His expression falls slightly. “So tell me, Westin. Why are you here?”

“You're different,” he says, his voice flat, humor no longer lacing his handsome features.

“It's been ten years, of course I'm different.” I don’t hide the agitation in my tone well.

He doesn't realize how painful this is for me. How much he hurt me and how hard it is to sit here with him so close and know that he can never be mine.

“I'm sorry about last night.” His apology catches me off guard. “I'm sorry for the way I went about things. For treating you like ten years ago never happened. We should have talked. I should have taken the time to explain some things. But then we kissed and it’s like every damn thing I wanted to say just went right out the window. It doesn't make it okay. I just didn't really know what to say. Seeing you, well, it really threw me.”

“I couldn't tell,” I mutter bitterly.

“Then you weren’t paying attention.”

Anger sparks in my chest.

“Listen, last night was a mistake. Plain and simple. So you can go, do whatever it is you do and just leave me alone.”

“Nothing we have ever done has been a mistake, Scar.”

“Maybe not for you.” I narrow my gaze at him.
