I shake my head, opting not to answer.

“Come on.” I gesture to my left. “There's something I want to show you.”

Without waiting for him to respond, I take off across the lawn, heading away from the festival.

“Where are we going?” he asks, jogging to catch up to me.

“You’ll see.”

We walk in silence for several minutes before finally reaching the edge of town where land meets water. The lighthouse can be seen in the distance; the light shining from the tower the only real light being provided over the black water.

I shiver from the cool breeze blowing in and Westin immediately wraps his arm around my shoulder and pulls me to him.

I should pull away.

I don’t.

“This is why I love Maine.” I gesture around us. “It's beautiful, but not in an overdone way. It's simple. It's natural. It's the way the rest of the world should be.” I peer up at Westin.

The minute my eyes lock with his, I know that no matter how much time has passed, Westin Carver still owns my heart. It’s undeniable. I can fight it all I want, but it still doesn’t make it any less true.

Being with him this evening, how easy it’s been, reminds me of how we used to be. And it’s impossible not to get sucked into the fantasy that somehow, after all these years, we could actually find our way back to each other.

But that’s all it is.

A fantasy.

“Scarlett.” He shifts so that he’s standing directly in front of me. One at a time, his hands slide up to my cheeks, cupping my face.

I forget how to breathe.

Slowly, he lowers his head and I swear, time slows down around us.

My head is screaming to stop him, but my heart? Well, that little bitch has a mind of her own, and right now stopping him is the last thing she wants to do.

I jump when I feel his lips brush against mine. It’s the softest of touches. A whisper really. But it’s enough to drown out every reservation, every thought, every ounce of will power I have left.

And when he tugs me closer, deepening the kiss, I know with complete certainty that I’m a goner.
