ADDIE

Oh, gods. It was happening.

It washappening!

Maddox’s cock pressed against my opening with only a few layers of thin fabric separating us. I wanted nothing more than to cast off all my clothes and pull him into me, but I didn’t know where to start. My need wasn’t strong enough to overpower my nervous caution.

And I hated it.

Frustration made my veins boil. My core throbbed. Maddox had to feel it. The way his shoulder heaved, his breath quick, I could tell that he needed this as much as I did. Yet, I froze.

Ifroze!

Maddox belonged to me and me alone. No one else would ever touch him the way that I could. There was no other woman who could caress his soul quite the way I could.

Was I giving myself a pep talk? Absolutely. Was it working?

No.

My heart still pounded. I swallowed the growing lump in my throat only to have it plummet like a stone. I didn’t know what I was doing, and I really needed to in this situation.

Maddox pressed his forehead to my shoulder. From there, I could hear his ragged breathing. His cock never softened. It remained rigid against my body. I needed to hear his heavy breath in my ear while his cock was buried deep inside me.

“We can wait,” Maddox said, like he had any plan to stick around.

I knew that he was going to call Hel and ask her to chain him in her dark underworld soon. This could be my last chance if I couldn’t convince him to stay. I tightened my grip on him like he might slip away at any moment.

I had to be honest with him. That was the only way relationships worked…and I think this counted as a relationship. Right?

“I’ve, um, never actually…” The words caught in my throat. My face burned with embarrassment. “I’ve never had sex before.”

Maddox lifted his head. He had one eyebrow curiously raised. “Are you waiting for marriage? Because we can fix that.”

My heart skipped a beat. Married? What? Was he being serious?

Before I could even ask, Maddox pulled back and dropped to one knee. He clutched my hand in both of his and looked up at me with open love across his face. The sight of him on his knee made my blood sing with joy. My heart hammered.

I never considered the excitement of a man on his knees before.

Was I into that? I’d always considered myself a kind of meek person, but that’s not who I’d been lately. This person that I was stepping into was much bolder. She had control over her life and didn’t let the people around her make decisions for her.

I had become the person I’d always wanted to be. I wasn’t Vi, with her laisse-faire attitude. I was Adeline, in perfect control of herself and the world around her.

And the sight of a man on his knees excited me.

Could he see it on my face? Maddox dropped to both knees. A sly smile reached the corner of his lips. I pulled my hand free of his and cupped his chin. He let me, his eyes drifting shut. He never even got the chance to voice his question.

So, I did it for him.

“Maddox Greene, will you marry me?” I asked.

He growled happily. His eyes cracked open to deliver a heated look. My blood answered, warming as my breath hitched.

Maddox was mine. As my lover, husband, and familiar, I would never let him hurt me. He had nothing to fear so long as control was in my hands.

There was something thrilling about Maddox, a shifter strong enough to challenge Ryder, submitting to me.
