I froze like a deer in the headlights of an incoming semitruck. The woman had followed me. I was lost somewhere deep in the woodlands of central New York, but she hadn’t thought twice about chasing after me—a monster.

“Quit running from me!” She stomped her foot. Her light jacket flared around her. Dirt bloomed in a cloud around her foot. “You can hate Fenrir and the woman who made him, but I don’t think I deserve any of that. I’ve done nothing but love you, and I’m not about to stop now. Maddox, I have seen every part of you, and I still love you. I need you to know that.”

Tears turned her eyes glassy. She clutched her fist to her heart. “I won’t betray you. I promise.”

That was it. I shattered. My beast slid back and let me walk to her on two legs. I took Addie into my arms and held her to my chest. “That’s not what I meant.”

Addie wasn’t having it. She pushed away from me to glare up at me. “Then why are you running? If it’s me, then I’ll do everything I can. I won’t turn on you like Fenrir’s lover did.”

Fury roiled in my chest, but not at Addie. I was angry that we had to do this. Fate decided to cross our stars. No matter what we did, we couldn’t untangle the mess that fate had made of the space between us. Though Addie owned my soul, I could never give her the kind of heart she deserved.

I gripped her chin and tilted her head back to force her attention on me. She kept her jaw firmly set. I wanted to rub away the tension holding her tight, but I knew it wasn’t going anywhere any time soon.

“Listen to me because I’m only going to say this once. I’m not afraid of you Adeline. In fact, I love you more than you could ever know. That is why I have to run. If I hurt you…” My throat closed at the idea.

Addie wound a hand around the base of my skull and gripped a handful of my hair. She yanked me close so that our lips crashed together. Her kiss was demanding and domineering. It nearly melted my resolve when she bit my lower lip and pulled.

I let my hands run down her sides. I couldn’t get enough of her. Yanking her tight to my body, I growled when I couldn’t find my way inside her. I wanted to be one with Addie just this once.

Instead of lowering her to the ground, I lifted her, spun, and pressed her against a tree. She eagerly wrapped her legs around my waist, so I could grind against her hot, wet core. Her head fell back, and she let out a moan that sent my beast into a whirlwind of emotion.

I cradled the back of her head to bring her back into another kiss. She responded eagerly…until she didn’t.
