He didn’t respond.

Well, hedidrespond, by hanging up, and instead of overthinking it, I just sent the damn picture. Since we couldn’t do much until we had the extra supplies, Mama and I broke for lunch. We were finishing up when Onyx arrived and the first question out of his mouth was, “Man y’all had lunch and didn’t save me any?”

A response Ireallyshould have anticipated.

The sound of his voice brought my mom into the kitchen, where she stopped for a moment and stared at him, wearing this strange look. “You’re the one who tracked down the motherfucker who hurt my baby.”

My eyebrows shot up.

I didn’t even know she knew that.

“Uh… yes ma’am,” he answered, with a nod.

“Come on in, I’ll fix you a plate,” she insisted, waving him further into the house. “We got plenty of extra over here in the fridge.”

“Nah.” He laughed, staying put at the doorway. “You don’t have to do that Ms. Carmen. I’m actually not hungry—for a change,” he added to the end.

“Ms. Carmen,” my mom said, with a nudge to my side. “This one’s got some good manners, baby. And look at them arms in his sleeves. A man with arms like that—”

“Okaythat is enough ofthat,” I interrupted, drowning out whatever she was about to say. “Onyx, thank you for dropping these supplies off for me. I’m sure you have somewhere to be.”

“Not really,” he told me, leaning into the doorframe with a grin that kind of made me want to treat him like one of the mitts from earlier. “Things are pretty quiet today.”

“Oh good,” Mama said. “You and those arms, y’all come on and help hang up some of these sticks Tatiana wants on the walls.”

Onyx frowned. “Sticks?”

“They’re notsticks,” I groaned. “We talked about this already, Mama. And he’s actually supposed to be taking it easy,” I reminded him.

He shrugged, stepping inside. “Can’t be any worse than anything I’ve already done today, right?”
