“Didn’t you break her heart?”

“That accusation assumes she has one and I’m not so sure.”

Alicia chuckled. “Heart or no heart, she knows something. She was outside that restaurant instead of laying low for a reason. And whatever that reason is, we’re going to have to figure it out.”

We hung up after that.

“Who is Margeaux?” Blue asked, navigating us back toward the clubhouse.

Shit.

“She is… Renard Belrose’s niece,” I answered. “I think I saw her on the street just now.”

“Shit.” Blue shook his head. “These motherfuckers are just coming out of the woodwork, huh?”

I chuckled. “Uh… Like I was telling Alicia, I don’t think she’s on Renard’s side. Maybe not ours either, but definitely not his.”

“Why not? Aren’t they family?”

“Yeah,” I confirmed. “But that only makes what he and her father did to her worse,” I said, pushing out a sigh as I dropped the phone into my lap. “She… does some fucked up things, but it’s barely her damn fault, honestly. She never had much of a choice.”

With his gaze turned out the window, he nodded. “Sounds like you know her pretty well.”

“Well enough.”

“Sounds like you care about her.”

I frowned, but he still wasn’t looking at me when I shrugged.

“I’m not sure it could be called that. Trauma bonded, maybe,” I said, with a dry laugh. “Or… shit. Maybe I did care about her at some point.”

“But then you left?”

My eyebrows furrowed together. “What? Nah, if anything, she…wait a minute. What the fuck is this about?” I asked.

“Well… It’s about you getting involved with Tati even though you’re planning to leave after this shit with whoever-the-fuck is over. Or did you forget you told me that shit?”

Fuck.

Fuck.

“I didn’t forget,” I answered honestly. “I just…”

“Figured she could handle it?” he interrupted, finally looking over to fix me with a scowl at a stoplight. “Well guess what, motherfucker, I don’t think she can.”

“I wasn’t thinking that shit anyway,” I denied. “I… wasn’t thinking about it at all, actually, if you want the truth.”

“She’s not worth that?”

“That’s not what I said.”

“You don’t have to,” he barked. “Your fucking actions did!”

“You were all gung-ho about this shit I thought?” I asked him, confused by his energy. “You were acting like you approved.”

“Before I knew about this Renard,Garden,Renegadosconnection and all this other shit,” he explained. “When I thought we could talk you into hanging around, yeah.BeforeI saw how she fucking looks at you, yeah. Before I thought I might really have to throw hands with your stupid ass, yeah.”

I blew out a sigh. “Listen, I wouldneverhurt Tati on purpose. You know that, don’t you?”

Blue shook his head, returning his attention to the road. “I’m not worried about what you might do on purpose; it’s the unexpected shit.”

I swallowed.

What the fuck was I supposed to say, when he was giving voice to exactly what I’d already feared?

“Let me say this,” he spoke up again. “If you leave – if ithurts her– you better go where I can’t fucking find you.”
