NYX

I groanedas I peeled my eyes open, forcing them to stay that way so I could take in my surroundings.

Good job, Nyx.

Another fucking windowless room.

My head was fuzzy, limbs sluggish, but a quick check didn’t reveal any swelling, no cuts or gashes. Which I took to mean I hadnotgotten my ass kicked while I was unconscious.

A good sign.

Maybe.

It could also be a way of giving me a false sense of security. I’d woken up mostly intact, but I was still in a room with only one way out, a single door, probably locked.

I was familiar with this kind of room.

I’dputpeople in this kind of room.

The table was bolted to the floor, but the chair was not. I didn’t see any mechanism for locking someone’s hands to the tabletop, surprisingly. I had done enough snatch and grabs to have a firm grasp on all the tips, tricks, tools, and toys.

I just wasn’t sure what methodology was about to be employedhere.

A sound just outside the room told me it was time to find out.

As the door swung open, I forced my heavy eyelids to stay open, trying to pull on any readiness for whatever I could muster.

The woman who walked in was… familiar.

Painfully so.

Whatever drugs they’d given me, I was still foggy to the point of discomfort, so I couldn’t immediately bring it to mind. Icouldcatalog the details of her though, filing them away for what would hopefully be another day in my life.

Tawny skin, athletic build, nice face. Her long hair swung behind her in a single braid as she turned away from me to close the door.

I shook my head, ignoring the steady pounding inside my skull. “You think I don’t know exactly what you’re doing?”

“What am I doing, Nyx?” she asked, moving to take the seat across from me at the table.

How the fuck does she know my name?

“You’re trying to make me think you’re not a threat,” I told her, eyes narrowed. “Make me think you’re stupid enough to turn your back to me when I’m unshackled. But I know better. How many motherfuckers are on the other side of that door waiting? Ten? Twenty?”

She shrugged. “Idohave a lot of operatives here at my compound, and I like to think the vast majority of them would be pretty upset about it if you decide to lay a hand on me. But you’re wrong about why I showed you my back,” she noted, smiling. “It wasn’t because I want you to thinkI’mnot a threat. It’s because I trustyounot to be a threat tome.”

“That’s stupid,” I quipped, and she laughed, shaking her head.

“I can understand why you’d think so, but I think your brain just needs to settle in with it a little more,” she said. “The sedative will wear off. I don’t believe you would hurt me at all.”

“Enlighten me,” I said, tipping my head to the side, my muffled thoughts working overtime trying to pinpoint who this woman was.

“I’d like to think I raised you somewhat. As much as any of us wereraisedrather than… constructed.”

My eyes narrowed even further, sharp pain coursing through my head as I absorbed her words. I had to look away, had to close my eyes for a moment to give them a break, but when my gaze returned to her face, it was like I could see her more clearly now.

It provided no comfort.
