ChapterSeven

TATI

What have you done?

That question played in my mind over and over, hours long after I’d made the mistake of opening my mouth.

I didn’t know what I expected the outcome to be when I’d asked Alicia about that tattoo, but it certainly hadn’t been getting snatched up and fearing for my life.

Though in retrospect… it’s exactlywhat Ishouldhave anticipated.

And I didn’t even end up with any answers, not direct ones at least. If anything, I hadmorequestions now, based on the questions she had askedme.

How long has Nyx been in Vegas?

Why is he here?

Who has he been talking to?

What do you know about him?

I didn’t knowanything, not really.

My curiosity was cured though.

As much as I wanted to know about Onyx and those thorns on his bicep, I wasmuchmore interested in keeping my damn head attached to my neck. Alicia had sent me back into that meeting like it was nothing, and I played it off in front of the men like everything was cool.

For hours.

Kingston had lunch brought in, and we talked more, made plans, all that, untilfinallywe could get the fuck outta there. Brandon was hype about business happenings, yammering away about it all when we first got back in the car, but once we were well away fromReverie, I explained the situation to him.

“Why thefuckwould you say something to her about the ink, Tati?!” he asked, eyes wide. Already, he was reaching under the seat, looking around as he navigated traffic to make sure we weren’t being followed.

“She doesn’t give a shit aboutus,” I tried to tell him, but he shook his head.

“How are you going to say that as if you didn’t get hemmed up?”

I blew out a sigh. “For information about Onyx, nothing more. This is something way over our heads.”

“What makes you so sure? She told you something else you forgot to mention?”

“No.” I shook my head. “She didn’t tell me anything else, but her reaction to my question, then the questionssheasked… doesn’t that kinda say it all?”

Brandon was silent a moment, then nodded. “Call Nyx.Now.We need to give him some kind of heads up. If he hasn’t already been got.”

“What part ofthis is over our headsdid you not hear?” I asked. “If he wanted our help with this shit, he should’ve dropped a hint when I asked his ass over and over is this something we need to be concerned about?”

“He’s inked. We’re supposed to watch his back.”

I huffed. “Seriously? This shit is exactly why he never should’vebeeninked! We’ve got enough problems without whatever this rose and thorn shit is!”

“Grow up,” Brandon snapped, shaking his head. “The nigga has a past,so what?!I know you’re trying to live up to what your pops did for the club – he kept an eye on everybody, all that –I get it. But we’re off that right now; wehaveto be.”

“Based onwhat?”

“The Fall,” he countered, turning to glare at me as we pulled up to a stoplight. “I don’t know who our enemies are right now, and we can’t just let that ride. It’s been too much fucking time, and we’re out here looking pussy because we haven’t made anybody pay for that shit!”

“We can’t answer that call without a goddamn structure in place, Brandon! You act like we’ve done nothing when we’ve been building…rebuilding. What do you think we’ve been doing all day?”
