That was some other shit.

Shit we already knew, because he’d put himself on our radar by beating up a handful of our members at once. They got their ink revoked and he took their place, even with his vague answers about where he was from, who he was, all that.

Brandon was impressed enough by what he could do for us that he let the shit slide.

I… wasn’t so easily moved.

I sauntered across the room, feigning interest in the images Maite had used to line the walls of her studio.

I could feel his eyes tracking me, as if he’d been trainedto find the largest threat in the room, and not let it out of his sight.

The type of shit my daddy taught me to be wary off.

“You’re not about to try to slit my throat or anything, are you?” he asked, as I purposely stepped beyond his peripheral.

“Try? No.”

“Wh—Hey!” Maite sputtered, outraged, as he pushed up from his prone position in her tattoo chair, turning to lock eyes with me. “Can y’all cut the shit so I can work?”

Ignoring her, he locked eyes with me. “I’m not fond of this game.”

The gravity of his tone made me raise an eyebrow. “What makes you think I give a fuck what you’re fond of?”

He shrugged. “I doubt you do. But Idothink you give a shit if I walk out of here and you never fucking see me again, which is what’s about to happen. Would Blue be good with that?”

“I’m sure he’d figure out a way to get over it.”

“Let’s cool down,” Keira spoke up, stepping between us. “This is supposed to be a rite of passage, a good thing…”

“Exactly.” Onyx nodded, looking past her, to me. “So you get your ass back where I can see you while she’s doing this shit, so we can move on.”

“Youwatch your goddamn tone with me,” I snapped, pushing Keira aside so I could step right in his face, staring him down.

“Tati!” Keira hissed, linking her arm with mine to try to pull me away.

Onyx smirked.

“I accept those terms,” he said, his words tinged with mischief in a way that made me roll my eyes as he relaxed again, letting Maite go back to what she was doing.

I conceded to Keira’s urging, allowing her to pull me to the front of the room to ask, “Seriously, what is up with you? You’ve never been so averse to a new member before.”

“I don’t trust him and I don’t understand why I’m supposed to.”

Keira’s eyes were wide as she shrugged. “Because Blue says so.”

“He’s not infallible,” I countered, even though… he’d never steered me wrong before.

Again, it was the only reason I hadn’t simply shot Onyx and left him for the coyotes after he beat up our damn members.

“He doesn’t seem that bad… does he remind you of an ex or something?” Keira snickered, making me scowl.

“Why the fuck would you ask me that?”

“Because.” She shrugged. “You seem personally offended by his presence.”

“Oh Iam,” I admitted. “Something about him is just… I don’t know. Unsettling.”

Maite was almost done with him, thank God.
