“You’ll see,” he insisted. “Ay, have you heard from Kev today? I had a call with him earlier.”

I cringed, grabbing my glass of water for a swig. “Uh-oh.Thecall?”

He nodded. “Yeah. I went ahead and let him know we were going with Ghost, but I tried to break it to him easy. Told him we would set up a time to maybe talk about him consulting on some private investments or something, but he wasn’t really trying to hear it. I expected him to show up atBottomslater so I could talk to him in person, but he never showed.”

“Aww,” I said, pouting for a second on his behalf. “I haven’t talked to him, but Dove shot me a text earlier, asking if something was going on. I don’t know if he’s still there or not, but he was drinking away his feelings earlier atAllurewith his favorite girl.”

Brandon shook his head. “See, this is why I don’t want you fooling with that nigga. Why is he atAllurein Sanaa’s face dealing with his disappointment instead of talking to you? What kinda shit is that?”

“Uh-uh.” I laughed. “He did the right thing; ’causeIdon’t want him crying to me about it. Go talk to the bitch you pay to care.”

“That’s cold, Tati!”

I shrugged. “I’m not trying to be cold, I just… had already warned him as much as I could. I made it clear to him that it was a long shot, which should’ve already been obvious, if we’re being honest here. Ofcoursethe position was going to Ghost.”

“Well yeah, but still, that’syourhomie,” Brandon teased.

“Youapproved his ink,” I countered, and he pushed out a sigh.

“Only one I question, every damn day.”

I looked up as the doorbell rang over the garden speaker. My eyes went to my mom first, who looked just as surprised, and then to Brandon, who didn’t at all.

“What did you do?” I asked, a quiet sinking feeling settling into my chest as he stood.

“Ms. Carmen!” he called, grinning at me before he turned to my mother. “I hope you don’t mind. One of my guys needed to give me a report in person, so I told him it was okay to swing by.”

“I don’t want no wild hoodlums in my house!” She laughed.

“I already got you, me and Tati are going to go talk to him outside.”

“We are?” I whined, but I knew there wasn’t really much I could do and I already knew exactly who “his guy” was that needed to show up at my mother’s house for a report. Onyx had spent the day with Teo doing reconnaissance, and whatever he had to say… I wanted to know.

Now.

“Shit,”I cursed as I hefted myself out of my chair. “You make me so sick.”

“Why you mad at me?” Brandon asked, laughing, as he led the way back through the house to the front door.

I stopped to glare at him. “’Cause I can’t believe you got this nigga at my mama’s house.”

”You don’t even know who it is,” he claimed, looking goofy. “I said one of the guys.”

I sucked my teeth. “Don’t play with me,” I told him, then took the last few steps to the front and flung the door open to, sure enough, find Onyx on the other side.

Shit.

Maybe I should have taken a moment to mentally prepare.

He was draped in my mama’s doorway looking fresh from my wildest dreams in a long-sleeved tee that was madejustfor those biceps of his. He was looking down at his phone, so his locs had fallen in front of his face. He pushed them back in reaction to the open door.

“Your meeting must have gone well? You appear to be in one piece still,” he said, with a slow perusal of my body that made goosebumps spread over my skin.

The good kind.

Well… depending.

“Why the fuck wouldn’t I be?” I asked, frustrated by my body’s treacherous reaction to his gaze.
