“This better not be his ass,” I muttered as I pulled up the cameras on my phone.

I sighed when I realized it was Kev on the other end of my camera—not Onyx, which was where my mind went first, leaning all against my front entryway like he owned the place.

“You’ve had people worried about you,” I told him over the speaker. “You okay?”

“No… I’m not,” he said and I stood up a little straighter when I heard the obvious slurring in his words.

“Are youdrunk?” I asked. “Did you drive over here like this?”

“Yeah,” he answered, looking forlorn as he gazed up at the camera. “I didn’t know where else to go.”

“Home, Kev; you should have gone home to sleep this off and get yourself together.”

“I need to see you. Talk to you.”

I shook my head, even though he couldn’t see me. “You haven’t called though. You just showed up,afterspending half the night atAllure. Why not go to Sanaa’s house, talk to her?”

“She’s not you,” he declared, breaking into sudden sobs. “So I went… I waited for you atBottoms, but you didn’t show up tonight.”

“Because I’ve been busy… taking care ofPredatorbusiness, and then I had dinner with my mom. I’m tired, Kev… you should get home. Use the app to order a ride.”

Assoonas I said that I heard the roll of thunder from the storm my mother must’ve been talking about. Vegas was typically dry, but when it rained, it came down like a bitch, andsuddenly. In what seemed like the next instant, thick sheets of rain started pouring down from the sky.

Ugh.

“You can come inside to wait, okay?” I told him, using my phone to unlock the door. I met him in the foyer, hands on my hips. “Why in the world would you drive over here when you’ve been drinking?”

He looked so damn pitiful coming through the door that I really did feel bad for him. I knew how much he wanted that position, but Ialsoknew Brandon had been as objective as possible in making the decision.

Still.

From Kev’s point of view, that probably didn’t make it less frustrating.

“I’ve just been… shit, trying to make sense of it,” he said, pushing out a sigh as he put his back to the wall, eyes pointed to the ceiling. “I get it, Ghost has been inked longer, and his father had the position first, but… damn. I really thought it was going to be me. I thought you were going to make it happen for me.”

My eyes narrowed. “I told you from the beginning that it wasn’t my decision, it was Brandon’s. It wasn’t up to me, and honestly, even it was… I can’t say the decision wouldn’t have been the same.”

His gaze came to me, defeated. “Damn. I… guess I should thank you for your honesty?”

“No,” I replied. “I just don’t want to lie to you. You probably would’ve been a good choice too, but Gavin was simply the better candidate for thePredators.”

I wasn’t sure if my clarification made it better or worse, but I was trying to be nice.

Blame the liquor.

I really should’ve let him just sit outside and hoped for the best, but I didn’t want to bemeanto him.

I just definitely, definitely wasn’t fucking him anymore.

This was pitiful.

“You know I’m heading out of town—private island, all expenses paid. Got some stuff to set up for a client. You should come with me.”

I shook my head, laughing. “Let me guess, somewhere with no extradition treaty? You have a tax shelter to set up?”

He smirked. “I can’t confirm or deny. But seriously… come with me.”

“I can’t do that. YouknowI can’t,” I told him. Jetting off to a private islanddidsound like a nice escape, but his complete lack of grace in accepting not getting the treasurer position… didn’t make my pussy wet.
