The police insisted we leave the tape up for a few more weeks, “in case someone sees the tape and it reminds them they know something”.
Bullshit.
They just wanted to nitpick however they could.
But the last couple weeks had given me more than just clarity—peace, determination, whatever I could grab.
This was my idea, my continuation of the security my father wanted to build.

I could be patient, that was fine.
“Just wanted to check in,” Jake lied, a strange sort of smirk on his face as he turned to me. “We’re friends here, right? Allies?”
“Stop playing with me,” I said, making a point of pulling my gun, but not pointing it at him.
“Okay, damn,” he said, raising his hands in an attempt to calm me. “I wanted to talk to you, about what I asked before—waybefore.”
I raised an eyebrow. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“A date, Tati.” He sighed. “Seeing if there’s… I don’t know, some chemistry there. We could—”
“Let me stop you right there,” I said, trying not to laugh. “I thought I already told you, absolutely not.”
“That was before, though.”
“Beforewhat?” I countered.
“Before he knew I’d put his foot up his own ass.”
Jake went hella pale, then bright red at the sound of Onyx’s voice.
I had no idea how long he’d been lurking, but apparently it was long enough to not like what he’d heard. It was like déjà vu, him stepping out of the doorway into the open, just as he hadwayback when he’d run up on Jake trying to get me alone before.
“Onyx!” he gushed fake as hell, trying to correct himself. “Good to see you still around, man.”
“Get the fuck out of here.”
“Will do. I’ll see you folks around,” Jake said, tossing up a hand before he did, indeed, get the fuck out.
“What’s wrong with him?” Onyx asked. “I thought you already made yourself clear?”
I laughed, shaking my head. “So did I, but… I don’t know. I guess he’s still angling for whatever power he can get, especially with this shift to Ivan in charge happening.”
“I’m smacking him if I see him in your face again,” Onyx warned, which only made me laugh harder, because…
“Do it.” I shrugged. “Fuck Jake and his kin.”
Onyx raised an eyebrow. “That’s how you feel?”
“A little. His daddy never liked mine, so they can kiss my ass. Anyway, what are you doing here?”
“Watching out forexactlywhat was happening,” he said, approaching to wrap his arms around my waist.
“This is not where you’re supposed to be,” I murmured against his lips as he lowered them to mine.
“I said I would meet the damn lady and I did. I said hello,” he told me and I rolled my eyes.
