I know, I know.

I swore I wouldn’t get emotional.

Fuck that.

I had the knife to his throat before I could even think about it, a mistake that could’ve cost. He knew exactly what he was doing, exactly the effect that jab would have on me. And he used that temporary lapse in control to get me close to him, where he grabbed my wrist and wrenched, making me drop the knife, where it clattered at our feet.

Good thing I had another one.

I wasn’tasagile with my left hand, but it was enough to get the second blade from my waistband and into my fist.

I jabbed it as deep into his groin as it would go.

The scream he left out was something like a wounded animal and I was quick to get out of his reach. I took the knife with me, twisting it as I pulled it out of him, just to make sure it hurt.

I kicked the blade I’d dropped way out of range as he dropped to the ground, clutching whatever was left of his supposed manhood. Deep red spread out from where his hands shielded him.

“Look what you made me do,” I jeered at him, ignoring the pain radiating from where he’d grabbed me. “After I told you whether or not you left depended onyou.”

“You were never letting me out of here,” he growled, his tone filled with rage and anguish. “Go ahead and kill me!”

“Youwish,” I snarled, already moving toward the door as it opened, as Keira and Alicia appeared with a few others behind them. “I’ll have a lot of things to answer for in hell, butyoursoulwon’t be one of them.”

“Tati, are you okay?” Keira asked, pulling me out of the room as Kev screamed and cursed. Alicia stepped out with us, letting the door close.

“I’m fine,” I assured. “I’m… great, actually. But he didn’t give me anything that helps us with Nyx.”

Alicia blew out a sigh. “Shit. Whatdidhe have to say?”

“He was working for Rojas,” I told her. “Who was being funded by someone sending deposits from France.”

“Belrose,” she guessed immediately and I nodded.

“Yeah. So, we know what that’s about. Renard has Manuel by the balls because he’s the bank behind their operations,” Keira said. “But it still feels like there’s some piece missing, even beyond Onyx being gone.”

My brain shifted back to that picture, to a truth I didn’t know how to reveal when I had no idea what the information implicated.

Or what the repercussions might be.

So instead of saying anything, I gave what seemed to be my default answer to everything lately.

“I have no idea.”
