CHAPTER5

Onyx

No matterhow hard I tried, I couldn’t renounce certain memories of my mother from my mind.

It was a curse.

A particularly cruel one.

Even after I’d decided I hated her—and Ihadto decide that—I would still find myself stuck in my own head, enthralled by her beauty, her voice, her talent. The same things everyone else admired about her.

The things she never let me forget I’d taken from her.

Me.

Not the Belroses, who terrorized her.

Not the motherfucker who violated and left me planted inside her.

Me.

The one who never had any choice in the matter.

The one who’d only ever tried to take away her pain.

Even after she tried her damndest to kill my will to live, even after she sacrificed me to be raised by wolves, even after her final rejection… I was here.

In Vegas.

To take away her pain.

“We knew someone would come eventually,” my captor said. “Wasn’t expecting Saanvi’s son.”

I watched her boots cross the ground in front of me, joining her partner.

It washotin here and the smell of dirt and leaves was making me nauseous.

“They were obsessed with her. He’s probably one of theirs—the Belroses.”

No.

“That’s who sent him here. It has to be.”

No.

“After all this time?”

“Who says they haven’t always known and just didn’t make a move?”

“Ma, you in there?!”

The introduction of a new voice, loud and casual, made me lift my head as my captors looked at each other with wide eyes.

No time—or place—to hide.

“Ay, why you not answering… your… phone.”

Blue stood at the entrance to the greenhouse transfixed, his brain obviously trying to make sense of what he saw. He stared at me, confusion building before his gaze shifted, first to Carmen, then to his own mother, Randy.
