It was unbearable.

“He’s… hewas… your father too, wasn’t he?” I whispered, as if a softer tone would lessen the impact. “A while ago… you told me sometimesThornshad to do things that were—”

“Would that make it okay?”

“No.No,” I insisted, stepping toward him. “And I’m not implying that it was, I’m just trying to make sure I understand what you’re saying. Is that… is that what happened?”

He shrugged, shaking his head as his eyes glossed over. “I never got to ask, so… I don’t know.”

Fuck.

Fuuuuck!

I closed my eyes, hopingsomesort of clarity might come to me from the brief moment of darkness.

Thiswas what Brandon knew and wasn’t telling me.

“Did you stay here to hurtus?” I asked when I opened my eyes.

Onyx was still in exactly the same place, unmoved.

He met my gaze and shook his head. “Absolutely not.”

“Okay.”

He blinked. “Do you believe me?”

The corners of my mouth tipped up, in a mirthless smile. “Yes.”

“Why do you seem sad about it?”

“Because,” I sighed. “I’m not sure how to make that matter to Brandon. He’s… in a place I’ve never seen him, probably because your existence has broken his view of his father. He wants you dead and I don’t know if I can do anything about it. This… all of it… it’s… the most messed up situation imaginable,” I said. “And I’m in the middle of it now.”

“No you’re not,” Onyx said, suddenly moving again, grabbing his jacket, shoes. “I just came to get my shit, and I’m out.”

“You didn’t need this shit,” I said, going to get in front of him, catching him by the zipper on his jacket. “You could’ve just left. You could’ve waited until I was gone and any number of possibilities. You got in here without being seen and waited for me.”

He shook his head. “I didn’t. I snuck in here moments before you did.”

“But you came back for something, nigga, and itwasn’tthese clothes. They aren’t that damn nice.”

He smiled.

Thank God.

Whatever happened to him, it hadn’t completely killed his spirit.

He tempered his expression quickly, feigning a neutrality Iknewhe didn’t actually feel as he looked down at me. “You’re right. I didn’t want to leave without seeing you one more time. So I took a chance on you being here and not shooting me on the spot out ofPredatorloyalty.”

“I probably should’ve. You sought out my club to commit what we would consider a capital crime.”

“I sought out your club to make my mother’s predator answer forhiscrime. What is it y’all like to say? Blood for blood?”

He was right.

Beyond right.

“Tati?”
