CHAPTER3

Onyx

“Pour qui êtes-vous ici?”

Those words struck an unexpectedly ugly chord in my brain, resonating into the deep recesses until they successfully slammed against my struggling mental defenses.

Of course, that was the intention.

In front of me, my captor smirked, clearly seeing through my attempt to be unfazed.

It wasn’t even the words themselves that were triggering.

It was the language.

How could they know that?

“I’m… not… here… for…Tati.”

I waged a mental protest against every word, but couldn’t keep them from spilling out.

What did they do to me?

Either way, my statement elicited a laugh from the person joining us in the center of what I now knew was a greenhouse.

“If you were here for thePredatorstreasured queen, you would already be dead,” she said, squatting in front of me as the other captor jabbed me with the bat again, highlighting her remark. “And you weren’t asked who youaren’there for. I want to know who your target is. I want to know what your mission is. I want to know who sent you here.”

“I sent myself,” I declared, eyes narrowed, as I realized this person was no stranger either, which only made me more confused. Of all people, why would—

“That’s a lie,” she hissed, straightening to a stand as she interrupted my thoughts. “Tell the truth.”

“Thatisthe truth.”

“No it’s not,” she screamed, snatching the bat into her own hands to jam under my chin as she got right in my face. “You’re not going to sit in my face looking just like her and convince me you weren’t sent by your mother.”

My heart calcified to a lump in my throat—one I tried my best to swallow.

“You knew my mother?”
