“Absolutely not.” I shook my head. “After the way Mama shut me down last night at the clubhouse, then cursed me out when I called to check on her a few hours ago… I think maybe you talk to Randy first and we see what we find out from there.”

“Sounds solid to me,” Brandon agreed. “But in the meantime… we still don’t know where the fuck Onyx got off to,” he said. “You can’t tell me it’s not suspicious as hell that he disappears after hearing the possibility that our fathers were the same thing as him.”

“You’re right, Ican’ttell you that. But the truth is, I don’t know what is happening and neither do you. Alicia wants me to meet at her compound to go through it all here soon.”

Brandon shot me a glare. “I bet she does. She’s probably got that nigga in the basement somewhere chained up next to Kev.”

Laughing, I shook my head. “I don’t think so. I get a very… me and you vibe from them. She seemed truly worried.”

“Me and you?” Brandon asked, eyebrows raised.

“Yeah, like sister and brother.”

Brandon’s head tipped up, like he was surprised by the information, but then he nodded. “I guess I did kind of pick up on some of that with that phone call after our meeting with Rojas. The one where I learned about Margeaux, which, how much do we know about her, really? She’s a Belrose, popping up in Vegas out of nowhere too. Maybe he was following her.”

Unbidden, a little prickle of jealousy washed over me, but I quickly shook it off. I’d never had a direct conversation with Onyx about the woman, so I only knew what had been briefly mentioned in our “conference” call yesterday.

Not much.

Which meant…

“Maybe,” I answered, refusing to delude myself into thinking otherwise. The absolute, irrefutable truth was that I didn’t know Onyx well enough to put much past him, and I didn’t know what to believe right now.

Learning about my father and then almost immediately being met with this disappearance had me in a tailspin, and it was taking all my momentum to not have a breakdown.

I didn’t have any energy to give my imagination.

Activity in the driveway drew my attention and I pushed off from the swing when I realized it was Keira pulling up. “She’s going to see Alicia with me,” I explained to Brandon, who stood too.

“She’s not the only one; you’re taking real muscle too.”

Immediately, I drew my head back. “What is—”

“Don’t play with me, Tati,” he said, raising a hand in authority that I, very, verygrudgingly, accepted. “I’m burning this city to the ground if something happens to you, and I really don’t want to have to do that. It’s already a half and half on me killing your boyfriend.”

I sucked my teeth. “Boyfriendis doing a lot. And stop talking about him like he did something wrong; wedon’tknow that.”

Brandon sighed, meeting my gaze. “I’m gonna ask you again, be straight with me,” he started. “Do you really think something went wrong out here last night… or do you think he just left?”

I hesitated for a moment, then shook my head. “I honestly just… don’t know,” I admitted. “But I have every intention of finding out.”
