I didn’t understandwhat was going on.
Actually, it was less that I didn’t understand it, more that… I was having trouble accepting it.
Why was everybody being so damn…cool?
I understood the rhetoric of it all, about me being inked, and thus being family. But there was no getting around the fact that when thoseThornsshowed up atBottoms, they had one clear initiative in mind.
Terrorizing me.
Through thePredators.
The people who lost their lives, the trauma the rest of them have faced, the grief they were experiencing now… all that shit had a very direct line, straight to me.
And yet, everywhere I turned, somebody was making sureIwas good.
It didn’t add up.
And that wholenot adding upmade it difficult to not cut and run, and get the hell out of there like I really wanted.
Did I really want that?

I’d been mentally wrapped up in all this shitmy whole life.
There was no part of my brain untouched by what I’d been through—from my mother’s hands to the Belroses. And now that it was finally done, finallyfor realover… I didn’t know what to do.

According to Alicia, I should be at peace.
But as I reminded her,thatshit was fleeting. True, she’d gotten a good five years of no new problems from the Belrose family after she tookThe Gardendown, but still.
All of that shit had come rushing back.
Only, she wasn’t the target.
Neither of us was really; I just happened to be seeking my revenge at the right time.

Or…shit, maybe it wasn’t a coincidence at all.
Maybe this was the divine order things were supposed to fall in the whole time.
There was no way for me to know for sure.
As much as I wished there was an outline somewhere that held all the answers, I was damn near still as in the dark as I’d ever been.
Renard was dead, my father was dead, my mother was dead.
Etienne was rotting in a prison cell somewhere.
There was no one I could go to demanding an explanation, no one who could give me reprisal for what I’d experienced.
