When I pulled my hands from his, he didn’t resist. “Why not? What did you think was going to happen?”

“I… thought you’d confirm what I heard about what happened to you,” he admitted. “Not with your father’s murder and being brought to the Garden. The other stuff… Maxim and Sebastian.”

I took a step back, trying not to give in to the caving feeling in my chest. “You were okay with coming back to the girl that got away from you, but not if she’s beenthatdefiled. Right?”

“What? No,” he insisted, but I’d already turned to walk away, back to my villa for the night.

Walking, and then, ridiculously, running.

And he let me, for a bit—probably so he wouldn’t get security called on him for chasing me down. I was conscious of him still behind me, at a distance, but it wasn’t until I was back at the door of my villa, my hands shaking as I tried to unlock the door, that he stopped me.

“Dacia.”

Just my name on his lips, and my fingers stopped moving.

Icould’vegotten away from him, could’ve been on the other side of the door, but I couldn’t make myself do it.

He grabbed me by the wrist, tugging until I willingly moved to face in his direction.

“Just leave me alone,” I whispered, trying to avoid his gaze. But then he cupped my face in his other hand, lowering his lips to mine, and…

It was almost like the entire world stopped, right then, with Isaiah’s body pressed against mine, firm and soothingly warm. His fingertips traced along my jaw, down to my neck, skimming my collarbone before finally resting at my neck, holding me there. At the same time, his other hand moved to the small of my back. Holding me there, too.

Not that I was going anywhere.

I would rather have died than leave the warm embrace of his arms.

He nudged the seam of my lips, and I let them part, inviting the warm rasp of his tongue into my mouth, savoring the oaky-sweet remnants of whatever he’d been drinking earlier. Every move he made, I tried to do the same, hoping I was giving back as good as I was getting.

But truthfully, I hadn’t been kissed like this since…ever.

I’d never been kissed like this.

And it was everything my teenaged self used to imagine.

More.

His hand pressed against my back, urging me closer than we could possibly get. Still, I fuckingtried, pushing my body into his as he devoured my mouth with a level of passion, of intimacy that I…

Didn’t even have words for.

And then he pulled away.

Much, much sooner than I wanted him to, which was never, despite my request from just moments ago.

He bit his lip and stepped back, giving me this heated, hungry look that made me squirm.

“I’m… gonna leave you alone, like you asked,” he said. “Mostly. I’ll be here, while you’re here, but I won’t bother you. I just wanted to make the point that if I thought you were… whatever it isyouseem to think you are… would I have kissed you like that?”

I… didn’t answer.

And I didn’t think I was supposed to.

I found the presence of mind to do precisely what I’d done the day of our last run-in—I got myself behind a locked door.
