“I needto talk to you. -Penelope”

That text from Pen atpreciselythat time was just about perfect, because I needed the distraction of talking.

I’d been back in my room from that whole encounter with Melanie and David for hours now, and it was still looping in my head.

I felt like an idiot, and it was keeping me from writing.

Or at least, that was the excuse I was using now.

Truthfully?

I probably wouldn’t have been writing anyway, because I would have been obsessing–still— about Isaiah instead.

I gladly closed my laptop and shot Pen a text back, telling her I was free. A moment later the phone lit up with an incoming video call, but when I answered, Pen’s face wasn’t the only one on the screen.

Alicia was right beside her.

“Is this some kind of setup?” I asked, and they both laughed as Alicia shook her head. “I didn’t even want her to call you with this right now. She’s just excited and can’t hold it in.”

“Okay… well, Idefinitelywant to know what’s up now.”

Pen beamed into the screen. “Remember thosefine assfootball players I told you about? One asked me to go to the movies with him,” she practically sang, and her excitement made me grin too.

“Okay, and what did you say?”

“I saidyes, duh! Didn’t you hear me say he was fine?”

“I did,” I laughed. “But I know that’s not theonlything, right?”

Pen rolled her eyes. “No, he asked in the library - where he was to get away from the rest of the team and their nonsense, becauseheis serious about his studies. So he’s not a bad influence. And did I mention hisshoulders?”

Beside her, Alicia rolled her eyes.

“Oh my God, Ace,whyare you trying to kill my vibe?” Pen fussed.

“I’mnottrying to kill your vibe! I… just feel you might be getting a little too excited, a little too soon. I don’t want to see you get your heart broken over this little boy.”

“Nobody said anything about myheart,” Pen giggled. “Sis, I want his mouth on my mouth. I know that’s something you’re far removed from,Mrs. Consensual Kissing with My Fine Ass Former Detective,” she teased Ace. “But me and Dacia, we haven’t had lipswe wanton us, in… ever. And it’s overdue. Please tell her, Dosh.”

I… couldn’t move my mouth.

And because I couldn’t recover fast enough from being put on the spot, my guilt was extra-obvious, Penelope and Alicia both peering into the screen—one set of eyebrows raised, the other set furrowed.

“Okay, sohoooldup,” Pen said, propping a hand under her chin. “Let me find out you in Californiakissing!”

“You tell Isaiah he’d better hope I don’t find his ass,” Alicia hissed at the screen, which made my eyebrows go up.

“Wait a minute,Ididn’t say anything about Isaiah — how do you even know he’s here?”

Alicia rolled her eyes. “Of courseI know he’s there.”

“So heishere working for you?”

“No,” she sighed. “And he’d better be glad, or I’d have people on his ass right now. I told him to back off, but he said he wanted to stick around and look over you. And… no, I didn’t exactly push the issue becauseI wantedsomebody looking over you. Which apparently was a mistake since he can’t fucking follow directions.”

“And what directions, exactly, did you give him?” I asked.

“To keep his hands off you- the same directions I gave before I knew y’all were damn teenage sweethearts,” Alicia huffed.
