I didn’t protest it when he raised me off of him to change my position and then started fussing at me about the redness of my knees.

“It was worth it,” I insisted, when I was tired of listening, then climbed up from his lap. I stuck my tongue out at him and then turned the shower back on, hitting him with the spray until he fought his way back up, laughing.

Definitely worth it.

My knees werefine, already back to their usual color by the time we actually left the bathroom. I threw on a robe, since I had no plans to go anywhere just yet, but Isaiah reallywasdue back at the center, so he put on clothes.

“Hey…” he started, coming to a very sudden halt to his progress with getting ready to go. “So… there’s something I need you to do for me.”

I had a cheese cube ready to pop in my mouth—post orgasm snack—but I stopped, raising an eyebrow over the gravity in his tone. “Anything. What is it?”

He smirked. “Damn. You agreefirst, and then ask what it is?”

“Zay.”

“Okay. I… kinda punked out, with reaching out to my family. Instead of just calling or whatever… I just sent a message, with my contact info. For them to reach out if they wanted.”

I frowned. “How is that punking out? You reached out first.”

“Yeah, with a three line message,” he shrugged. “Because I didn’t want to be caught on the phone or like… a video call with people who weren’t even… interested.”

I put a hand to my chest, but restrained myself from theawwwwI really wanted to let out. Instead, I said nothing, and let him continue.

“But… they…areinterested. They reached out—my mother’s sister, in Ethiopia. My aunt. And I’ve got cousins. They want to do a video call, so they can see me, and I can see them.”

A huge smile spread over my face. “Zay, that’samazing. When are you doing it?”

“We scheduled it for tomorrow,” he answered. “And… I want you there with me. Sorry to spring it last minute, I know you’re trying to finish—”

“Fuck thisbook,” I laughed. “Of course I’ll be on the call with you. Thank you for inviting me.”

His brow furrowed. “Thank you for inviting me? Nah… you’re… my family.Thank youfor agreeing to it, cause I… I can’t imagine you not being there. You can’t clown me if I get emotional though.”

“Whaatt?” I laughed, standing to meet him at the foot of the bed. “You? Emotional? I can’t evenimaginethat,” I teased, reaching up to hook my arms around his shoulders. “I… amsohappy for you. How do you feel? Are you excited?”

“I am,” he admitted. “And… nervous. But mostly just… settled, if that makes sense. Like all these elements, all these moving parts are finally falling into place. Like I’m finally reallyrooted. I’ve got…hobbies, and I’ve got my lady, and I’ve got… just, a life. Remember when all this stuff, everything that’s happening for us now… it was all just fantasies?”

I nodded. “Yeah. I do.”

“This is… terrifying,” he laughed. “I’m not supposed to be scared of shit, I know, but… this is a lot.”

I giggled. “Yeah, it is, but… we can handle it,” I told him, even though I had my own doubts.

“We can,” he agreed, meeting my gaze with…somethingin his gaze I couldn’t figure out. “I’ve gotta go. I’m coaching this time, instead of running around trying to keep up with youngins as referee.”

I smiled. “You and your kids. I love it. Gone on, daddy Isaiah, I’ll see you later.”

He groaned, reaching down to grip my ass. “I kinda like how that sounds…”

“Gone,” I laughed, pushing him away so he could finish getting ready.

Once he’d kissed me goodbye, I was able to sit back and really reflect on what he’d said. I was feeling much the same as he was… rooted.

Only I was still worried they were shallow.

So much of what we’d thought was impossible had come to fruition, and as much as I wanted to just bask in it all, something was holding me back.

And really… I’d tried to manage that feeling on my own, and then with my therapist, enough.
