“Drink the pink liquid,” I said, remembering that I hadn’t seen her drink much since she’d come to our room.

“I’m more of a plain water kind of girl,” she responded coolly.

If I was going to protect her, I figured I’d better start. “You need to drink it.”

“Last time someone told me to drink something, I ended up with blood in my mouth. Thanks, but no thanks.”

“It’s for your safety,” I persisted. “It’s given to all the humans when they arrive and the newbloods.”

“Safety? And here I thought you were poisoning me,” she said while regarding me.

“It contains Acaralia, a native herb that will prevent a babe from growing in your belly.”

She stopped abruptly, her eyes flaring wide. “Wait…it’sbirth control?” Her mouth dropped open, and the expression was almost comical.

My face remained passive, and I shrugged, not understanding her reaction. “If a human becomes pregnant before they turn, when they transform into a monster either the babe is killed as she changes, or the mother is torn apart when the babe turns. It’s also well-known that newbloods have high libidos. Until they join a house, they’re free to bed whomever they want. The Acaralia prevents the creation of crossbreeds.”

“Good thing I don’t plan on sleeping with any of you assholes.”

I raised a thick brow, remembering how I’d woken up between her thighs, even if she had been planning to kill me. If the bond had any of the same effect on her as it did on me, it was a wonder she hadn’t already bedded one of us. Just thinking about it was making my cock hard. But that was not why I was telling her this.

“Like I said, there are worse monsters out there than us,” I growled. I hoped she got my meaning after meeting Zacal. “And we’re telling monsters that you’ve already turned. No one will think you’re human.”

I could see her mind working. Her brow crinkled as she processed my words. Eventually, she nodded, and we began walking again. “This world just keeps getting better and better,” she muttered.

I didn’t answer, and I didn’t think she expected me to. My head was light with the loss of blood, and it was a wonder I was even managing to stand.

IscentedKade’sbloodon the air and raced up the tunnel.Fucking Halced, finally.Darian and Asher followed behind me, keeping up easily. The three of us had been searching the mountain since we’d all woken from sleep, a blinding pain in our chests. We’d bolted out of bed, but by the time the three of us were in the tunnels, the pain had disappeared, the bond between us and Raine calming, so we had no idea where the human was.

Rounding the bend of the tunnel, a long breath escaped me when I spotted them up ahead. Two heads lifted as we approached, amber and blazing golden eyes peering at me. I didn’t pause to think about how Kade’s eyes were glowing brighter than they had in over a century.

Stopping in front of them, my gaze swept over where Raine stood, Kade’s arm hooked over her shoulders. Black blood splattered over her, and my nostrils flared as I breathed in deeper, checking for any scent of her blood. Satisfied when I didn’t notice anything unusual, I turned to my wolf brother. He was smeared with black, his naked body brutalized with wounds, and I had an idea who had given him the treatment.

My shoulders became rigid and my eye twitched. “What happened?”

“Went to the training room,” Kade said in a low voice. “Zacal and a few of his wolves showed up.”

My lips pressed together into a thin line as I tried to contain my anger. If Kade only let me fight the pathetic wolf alpha, Zacal, we wouldn’t have been dealing with this shit. I wouldn’t kill the wolf. That would bring the council down on us, but I could have taught him a lesson. Kade didn’t deserve the treatment Zacal and his followers were all too happy to give him.

“Fucking hell,” Asher breathed behind me.

My fury only grew when I thought of the fact Raine had been there. Zacal should have known better than to mess with a newblood, but I didn’t trust the slimy bastard. Had he touched her?Fuck.

I shouldn’t have cared. Ididn’tfucking care. Or that was what I told myself. There was no pain in my chest, so if we were right about the bond, that meant Raine wasn’t in danger. My attention went back to her, but from the fire that burned in her eyes, I knew she was unharmed.

“Where the fuck are they, Kade?” I asked, my voice lethal.

Asher moved forward, taking the burden of Kade from Raine and draping Kade’s arm over his own shoulders. Darian grabbed Kade’s other arm.

“We took care of it,” Kade said, and his lip tipped upward into a half grimace, half smile.

We?I didn’t get the chance to ask what he meant.

“What the fuck, Kade? Are you smilin’? I didn’ even know your lips could still do that,” Asher said.

Darian laughed. “And here I thought the human might try to slit your throat while you slept. From the looks of it, she saved you.”
