“Okay, not hang out. A date.” I bite my lip. “I thought a lot about what I said and I want to see how we go. Maybe I'll change my mind.”

Avery gives a short bark of a laugh. “Ha! Wow, that's kind of you.”

“Avery,” I say softly. “Come out with me again.”

“Are you still screwing random girls?” she shoots back. “For example, the girl I saw you with last night?”

“No. I'm saving myself for you now.” Teasing, but this is half-true. I’m over the sleeping around after just two attempts. I thought it would make me feel better, but instead, I feel like shit. Admittedly, Avery is on my radar and screwing other girls won’t help me change her mind.

The teasing words silence Avery and the sound of her exhaling loudly follows. I take advantage of her weakening hesitation. “Do you want me to pick you up or meet you there?”

“Meet me where?”

Good question. I flick through the junk mail on the table in front of me and a picture catches my eye. “Canary Wharf ice rink.”

“What the hell? Ice-skating? Are you mad?” she asks incredulously.

“Don't you like ice-skating?”

“It's not that. It’s just… you're weird.”

Yes. Almost.“But fun. I'm crap at ice-skating; you can photograph me and post pictures on the internet. Embarrass me in return for last night.”

“It's not embarrassing if you want me to do it.”

“C’mon, cariad. I know you want to go really.”

“Maybe.” There's a smile behind her answer and I'm damn sure I can turn that into a yes.
